RICHARD LONGHORNE (d. 1669)

MARY CROSBY (bp. 1629–1667), daughter of Robert Crosby and Constance Brigham

It is recorded that Richard Longhorne of Rowley died on 13 February 1668/9 in Haverhill and was buried that day in Rowley, both in Essex County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He married Mary Crosby on 16 January 1647/8 in Rowley. [2]

Mary Crosby was baptized on 4 December 1629 in Holme, Cambridgeshire, [3] She was buried on 29 November 1667 in Rowley. [2]

Richard was made a freeman at the March 1650 court in Ipswich. [4, 1: 186] He was on the trial jury at the September 1650 court in Ipswich. [1: 197]

Richard was an innkeeper. He was licensed to keep an ordinary for the forthcoming year and draw wine and liquor in March 1663. His licensed was renewed in March 1664, March 1665, March 1666, and March 1668. [4, 3: 47, 135, 241, 308; 4: 9]

On 24 September 1695 Abraham Haseltine and Elizabeth, his wife, Widow Constance More, Benjamin Muzzey and Sarah, his wife, Amos Marrett and Bethiah, his wife—daughters and co-heirs of Richard Longhorne, late of Rowley, sued Thomas Stickney of Bradford, Daniel Black of Boxford, Thomas Palmer of Rowley, and Samuel Cooper of Rowley for withholding possession of about 100 acres in Boxford. The defendants did not appear and the plaintiffs recovered possession. [5]

Richard Longhorne of Rowley made his will on 10 February 1668. He named his daughter Elizabeth an executrix, along with his brother Thomas Longhorn, and left her a double portion. He mentioned his three other daughters, his servant Samuel Wood, son of Obadiah Wood, and his brother John Johnson of Rowley. Thomas refused to be an executor, saying he lived too far away. Inventory on his estate was taken on 24 March 1668/9 and attested to on 30 March 1669; it amounted to about 732 pounds. [6]
