RICHARD THORLEY (d. 1703)

Richard Thorley died on 26 November 1703 in Newbury. [1]

Jane ___ died on 19 March 1683/4 in Newbury. [1]

Richard's last name is spelled in many different ways.

Richard was in Rowley by 1640. He had a two-acre houselot there in 1643. [2]

Richard was made a freeman on 28 March 1647/8. [3, 1: 139] He was on the trial jury at the September 1651 and September 1653 quarterly courts in Ipswich. [3, 1: 232, 289]

In 1651 Richard sold his home in Rowley to Captain John Johnson and he and his family moved to Newbury. [2] By a deed of 1 December 1651 Richard Thorley purchased a 400-acre farm in Newbury from Matthew Chaffey. [2] He was granted land by the Newbury River in 1653 and he built a bridge over the river. [2]

Richard signed the petition in favor of Lieutenant Robert Pike, presented at the September 1654 court in Ipswich. [3, 1: 366]

Richard was released from ordinary training by the March 1661 court in Ipswich; he was to pay 8 shillings a year for the use of the military company. [3, 2: 279]

Richard deeded land to his son Thomas on 27 January 1669. [2]

Children of Richard Thorley and Jane Unknown:

i. John Thorley was baptized on 21 August 1628 in Holme, Cambridgeshire and buried there on 6 June 1636. [4]

Hatcher points out that the Holme baptismal records align well with Richard's family. [4]

ii. Francis Thorley was baptized on 7 February 1630 in Holme. [4] He died on 26 November 1703 in Newbury. [1] He married Anne Morse on 5 February 1654 in Newbury. [1][2]

iii. Thomas Thorley was baptized on 1 January 1632/3 in Holme. [4] He died on 23 June 1713 in Newbury. [1] He married Judith March on 13 April 1670 in Newbury. [1][2] Judith, the daughter of Hugh and Judith March, was born on 3 January 1652 in Newbury. [2] She died on 11 July 1689 in Newbury. [1]

iv. Lydia Thorley was baptized on 25 January 1635/6 in Holme and was buried there on 29 July 1636. [4]

v. Mary Thorley was baptized on 28 May 1637 in Holme. [4] She married John Wolcott on 20 November 1653 in Newbury. [1][2] John, the son of John Wolcott, was born about 1632 and died on 30 September 1690 in Springfield. [2]

John and Mary may have moved to Brookfield and been driven by the Indians to Springfield. [2]

vi. Lydia Thorley was born on 1 April 1640 in Rowley. [5] She married first Nathaniel Wells of Ipswich on 29 October 1661. [2] She married second Nathaniel Emerson. [2]

vii. Martha Thorley was born say 1642. She died on 29 June 1700 in Rowley. She married John Dresser.

viii. John Thorley was born on 19 July 1644 in Rowley. [5] He died on 4 July 1659 in Newbury. [1]
