CAPTAIN DANIEL WICOM (c. 1634–1700), son of Richard Wicom

MARY SMITH (1642–1691), daughter of Hugh Smith

Captain Daniel Wicom was born about 1634, probably in England. He died on 13 April 1700, age 65, in Rowley, Essex county, Massachusetts. [1] He married first Mary, the daughter of Hugh Smith, on 14 or 24 October 1658 in Rowley. [1][2, 2: 122] He married second Lydia Platts on 11 November 1691 in Rowley. [1][3][4] She was Lydia Bailey, the widow of Abel Platts. [3]

Mary, the daughter of Hugh and Mary Smith, was born on 17 March 1642 in Rowley. [1] Mary, the wife of Captain Daniel, was buried on 29 January 1690/1 in Rowley. [1]

Daniel deposed that he was 30 in March 1671 and about 40 in June and November 1681. [2, 4: 347; 8: 128, 214] This suggests he was born about 1641. This would make him very young when he got married. His reported age at death seems more plausible.

Daniel was a carpenter and farmer. [4]

Daniel was fined for some unknown transgression by the November 1657 quarterly court in Ipswich. [2, 2: 55] He was fined for entertaining men's servants and sons at an unseasonable time of night and excessive drinking at the November 1665 court in Ipswich. [2, 2: 180]

Sarah Smith chose her brother-in-law Daniel Wicom as her guardian at the March 1664 court in Ipswich. [2, 3: 136] Samuel Smith chose Daniel as his guardian at the November 1665 court in Ipswich. [2, 3: 292] The orphan Sarah Longhorne chose Daniel as her guardian at the May 1674 court in Ipswich. Her grandmother Constance Crosby did not approve, saying that Sarah needed someone with more experience. She asked it not be granted until her uncle Thomas Longhorne of Cambridge approved. [2, 5: 307–8]

Daniel was a selectman in Rowley in 1677, [2, 6: 269]

On 22 October 1677 the General Court in Boston ruled that Daniel Wicom and three others had fomented dissent in Rowley over the ministry of Mr. Shepard and ordered them admonished and to pay costs of £6-07-08. [5, 5: 173]

On 12 August 1685 Daniel was one of six inhabitants of Rowley and Rowley Village, acting on behalf of the town and village, that petitioned for Rowley Village (later Boxford) to be a separate town. [5, 5: 497–8]

Captain Daniel Wicom of Rowley died intestate. Inventory on his estate, exhibited by his widow Lydia on 5 August 1700, amounted to £703-12-04. On 10 June 1700 Lydia, Daniel Wicom, Samuel Johnson, and Rebecca Wicom signed an agreement setting out Lydia's widow's third. [6]
