Isaac Learned (bp. 1624–1657), son of William Learned and Goodith Gilman

Mary Stearns (bp. 1626–1663), daughter of Isaac Stearns and Mary Barker


Isaac Learned was baptized on 25 February 1623/4 in Bermondsey, county Surrey. [1] He died on 8 (10) 1657 in Chelmsford. [2, 11] He married Mary Stearns on 9 July 1646 in Woburn. [3]

Mary was baptized on 6 January 1625/6 in Nayland-with-Wissington, county Suffolk. [4] She died on 8 January 1663. [A] Mary married second John Burge of Weymouth on 9 June 1662. [5][6] John married next the widow Grisell Gurney, as her fourth hasband, she having previously been married to Thomas Jewell, Humphrey Griggs, and ___ Gurney. [6] She died on 9 July 1669 in Chelmsford. [6] John married Jane, the widow of John Gornell of Dorchester in June 1676. [6] She died on 4 April 1678; he died on 22 October 1678. [6]

Isaac came to New England with his parents in 1630.

Isaac's wife Mary was the sister of John Stearns. [7]

One thousand and five hundred acres lying north of Concord in present-day Billerica was conveyed to Deputy Governor Thomas Dudley, and on 28 February 1651/2 he sold this land to Thomas Chamberlain, James Parker, and Isaac Learned of Woburn for 110 pounds. These three men became citizens of adjoining Chelmsford. [7]

In 1652 Isaac sold his house and land in Woburn to Bartholomew Pierson of Watertown and moved to Chelmsford. [A]

Isaac Learned was one of the petitioners for a grant of land for the town of Chelmsford on 19 May 1653. [2, 2–3] He was a trustee of the town in 1654. [2, 754] At the second town meeting on 21 (1) 1655 he was chosen sergeant of the trainband. [2, 13] He was an original church member in 1655. [2, 11]

Isaac Learned's wife was an early member of the church in Chelmsford in 1655. [2, 12] Mary owned the covenant at the church on 11 (4) 1656. [2, 26]

Inventory was taken on Isaac's estate on 18 (10) 1657. It amounted to £187-18-06. [8]

Inventory was taken on Mary's estate on 21 December 1663. [A]

On 2 (12) 1667 Samuel Stearns posted a bond and Isaac Stearns was a surety concerning the children of Isaac Learned. [9]

In his will of 1 June 1671 John left bequests each to the six children of Isaac Learned: Mary Barron, Hannah Farwell, William Learned, Sarah Learned, Isaac Learned, and Benoni Learned. [A]

i. Mary Learned was born on 15: 5m: 1646. She was baptized on 1: 12m: 1656 in Chelmsford. She married Moses Barron.

ii. Hannah (Anna) Learned was born on 11: 6m: 1648. She was baptized on 1: 12m: 1656 in Chelmsford. She married Ensign Joseph Farwell on 15 December 1666 in Chelmsford. [10, 26]

iii. William Learned was born on 1: 8m: 1650. He was baptized on 1: 12m: 1656 in Chelmsford. He was living on 1 June 1671.

iv. Sarah Learned was born on 15: 9m: 1652. She was baptized on 28 October 1653 in Chelmsford. She was living and unmarried on 1 June 1671.

v. Lieutenant Isaac Learned was born on 16 September 1655 in Chelmsford. He was baptized [?] on 5 October 1655 in Chelmsford. He died on 15 September 1737 in Framingham. [11] He married Sarah Bigelow on 23 July 1679. [11]

vi. Benoni Learned was born on 29 November 1657 in Chelmsford. He was baptized [?] on 4 December 1657 in Chelmsford. He was living on 1 June 1671.
