HUGH SMITH (d. by 1655)


Hugh Smith died shortly before 14 December 1655. He married Mary ___.

Mary married [second?] Jeremiah Elsworth on 2 December 1657 in Rowley. [1]

Hugh was a freeman on 18 May 1642. [2]

Hugh was on the trial jury at the November 1645, September 1649, and March 1655 quarterly courts at Ipswich. [3, 1: 86, 175, 381. He was on the grand jury at the September 1650 and September 1653 courts at Ipswich. [3, 1: 197, 289]

Hugh Smith's undated will was proved on 25 March 1656. He left his wife Mary his estate for her widowhood. If she were to remarry she were to remarry she was to have one-third plus five pounds for bringing up their youngest son. His children were to have equal portions, except the eldest son Samuel was to have half again as much as the others. Inventory of his estate, taken on 14 December 1655, amounted to £234-11-09. The widow Mary testified to it on 25 March 1656. [4]

Jeremiah Elsworth, upon his marriage to Mary Smith, posted bond on 26 September 1657. The condition was that he pay their portions to Hugh's children: Samuel, Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Martha, and Edward Smith. [3, 2: 56]

i. Samuel Smith

ii. John Smith (possibly) was buried on 19 July 1661 in Rowley. [1] He married Faith Parrat on 24 February 1657 in Rowley. [1] She married subsequently William Law on 2 May 1666 in Rowley. [1

iii. Mary Smith was born on 17 March 1642 in Rowley. She was buried on 29 January 1690/1 in Rowley. She married Captain Daniel Wicom.

iv. Sarah Smith was born on 24 October 1643 in Rowley. [1] She was buried there on 1 January 1643/4. [1]

v. Hannah Smith was born on 24 March 1647 in Rowley. [1] She married Joseph Trumble on 6 May 1669 in Rowley. [1]

vi. Martha Smith was born on 5 February 1648/9 in Rowley. [1] She died in 1716 in Bradford. [5] She married first Caleb Burbank on 6 May 1669 in Rowley. [1] She married second John Hardy on 3 July 1695 in Bradford. [5]

vii. Edward Smith was born on 1 June 1654 in Rowley. [1]
