HOPESTILL LELAND (1653–1729), son of Henry Leland and Margaret Badcock

ABIGAIL HILL (1658–1689), daughter of John Hill and Hannah Unknown

Hopestill Leland was born on 15 November 1653. [1] Deacon Hopestill Leland died on 19 August 1727 in Sherborn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He married first Abigail Hill on 5 November 1678 in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. [1][3] He married second Patience Holbrook on 2 February 1691 in Sherborn. [2][4] Patience, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Holbrook, was born on 27 January 1669/70 in Medfield. [3] Patience, the widow of Deacon Hopestill, died on 5 October 1740 in Sherborn. [2]

Norfolk County was formed in 1793, so references are to the current locations of towns.

Henry is buried in the Old South Cemetery in Sherborn. [5]

Abigail, the daughter of John and Hannah Hill, was born on 2 February 1657/8. [1] Abigail, the wife of Hopestill, died on 5 October 1689 in Sherborn. [1][2]

Abigail's father referred to the heirs of his daughter Abigail Leland in his will of 10 December 1717. [1]

Hopestill was a selectman in Sherborn for ten years. [6]

Hopestill Leland of Sherborn made his will on 18 August 1729. He left his wife Patience all of his indoor and movable goods for her lifetime. He left his sons Henry, Hopestill, John, William, and Joseph and his daughter Abigail, the wife of Lieutenant John Bullard, ten shillings each, saying that he had previously provided for them. He left his daughter Margaret Leland land that he had gotten from his wife in Sherborn, near a place called Dunstable, land in Holliston and 100 pounds. He noted that he had previously given his son Isaac half his farm and he gave the other half to his son Joshua. He also gave them the rest of his land and his husbandry tools, on the condition that they care for their mother, and named them his executors. He signed his will with a feeble signature. His son Isaac presented the will to the probate judge on 8 September. Henry and John objected to the will, saying that their father was dying when he made it and not in his right mind. Probate took place on 13 October 1729, with Henry agreeing and John continuing to object. [7]
