HENRY LELAND (c. 1625–1680)

MARGARET BADCOCK (d. 1705)

Henry Leland was born about 1625. [1] He died on 4 April 1680 in Sherborn. [2] He married Margaret Badcock. [1]

Margaret died on 21 May 1705 in Sherborn. [2]

Margaret was probably the sister of Captain Robert Badcock.

Henry was a tailor. [3]

Henry was admitted to the church in Dorchester on 22 May 1653. [3]

In 1654 Henry became one of the first settlers of Sherborn. [4] He settled in the southeastern quarter of Sherborn, known as Bogistow. [3] For 12 years he lived on land owned by Thomas Holbrook. [3] On 3 March 1660 he gave his bond for 40 pounds to Henry Lane of Boston for 200 acres. He obtained the deed for this land in 1667 [3] In 1666 he received a deed from Thomas Holbrook for 80 acres. [3] His first house was on the land he bought from Thomas Holbrook and it burned that year while he was away. [3]

He was part of a committee that signed articles of agreement between the town of Sherborn and the town of Natick on 16 Apr 1679. [5] He and Ens. Bullen were chosen a committee with the selectman to grant lots in 1679. [5]

Henry paid three shillings as part of Medfield's contribution to Harvard College in 1678. [6]

Henry made his will on 27 March 1680 and his witnesses testified on 8 June 1680. His heirs were his wife Margaret, his son Eleazar, Bethiah Twitchell (who was underage), his eldest son Hopestill, and his son Ebenezer. He named his wife and Hopestill his executors and his brother Robert Badcock his overseer. He also mentioned a brother "Brazier." [1]
