JAMES CHUTE (b. c. 1648), son of James Chute and Elizabeth Epps

MARY WOOD (1654–aft. 1711), daughter of Thomas Wood and Ann Unknown


James, the son of James and Elizabeth (Epps) Chute, was born about 1648. [1] He married Mary Wood on 10 November 1673 in Rowley or Ipswich. [1][2][3] Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Wood of Rowley. [4]

James deposed that he was 19 years old at the 31 March 1668 quarterly court in Ipswich. [1][5]

Mary Wood, the daughter of Thomas and Ann Wood, was born on 15 March 1654/5 in Rowley. [2][3] She died after 3 March 1710/1, when she joined in a land transaction. [3]

There are no Essex County death or estate records for James or Mary. [3]

Mary is referred to as March Chute in the 21 July 1687 will of her father. [4]

Children of James Chute and Mary Wood:

i. Mary Chute was born on 16 September 1674 in Ipswich. [6] She died on 10 September 1750 in Newbury. [3] She married Deacon John Cheney of Newbury on 7 March 1693/4 in Rowley. [2][3][7] John, the son of Peter and Hannah (Noyes) Cheney, was born on 10 May 1666 in Newbury and died there on 2 September 1750. [3]

ii. Elizabeth Chute was born on 22 June 1676 in Ipswich. [6] She died in Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire on 3 April 1761. [3] She married first as his second wife Andrew Stickney of Newbury about 1694. [3][7] Andrew, the son of Amos Stickney, was born on 10 December 1667 in Newbury and died between 22 January 1716/7 (when he made his will) and 22 July 1717 (when it was proved). [3] Elizabeth married second as his second wife Henry Lunt on 28 March 1724 in Newbury. [3] Henry, the son of Daniel and Hannah (Coker) Lunt, was born on 23 June 1669 in Newbury. [3]

iii. Ann Chute was born on 9 October 1679 in Ipswich. [6] She married first Ichabod Cheney on 5 January 1708/9 in Rowley. [2] Ichabod was born on 22 September 1685 in Newbury. [3] Ann married second Thomas Brown on 21 December 1745. [3][7] Thomas, the son of Francis and Mary (Johnson) Brown, was born on 1 July 1667 in Newbury and died there on 21 December 1745. [3]

iv. Lionel Chute was born on 15 April 1681 in Ipswich. [6] He married Anna (Hannah) Cheney of Newbury on 10 December 1702 in Rowley. [2][3][7] Hannah, the daughter of Peter and Hannah (Noyes) Cheney, was born on 12 September 1683 in Newbury. [3]

v. Deacon James Chute was born on 14 June 1686 in Ipswich. [6] He died on 31 January 1769 in Newbury. [3] He married first Mary Thurston of Newbury on 26 January 1715/6 in Rowley. [2][3][7] He married second Sarah (Hale) Pearson on 30 March 1761 in Rowley. [3] Sarah, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Northend) Hale and widow of Joseph Pearson, was born on 9 March 1692/3 in Newbury and died there on 9 May 1762. [3] James married third Hannah (Emery) Chase after 30 October 1762 (intention, Newbury). [3] Hannah, the daughter of John and Mary (Sawyer) Emery and widow of Samuel Chase, was born in 1695 and died on 6 October or 6 December 1776 in Newbury. [3]

vi. Deacon Thomas Chute was born on 30 January 1690 in Ipswich. [6] He died in 1771 in Windham, Cumberland County, Maine. [3] He married Mary Curtis on 11 December 1712 in Boston. [3] Mary was born about 1692 and died on 30 July 1762 in Windham. [3]

Dudley says he married a daughter of "Mr. Clarke of Boston." [7]

Thomas was a tailor, town clerk and selectman in Windham. [3]

vii. Martha Chute was born on 15 February 1693 in Rowley. [2] She died on 4 July 1777 in Newbury. [3] She married Josiah Smith of Newbury on 15 April 1712 in Newbury. [3][7] Josiah was born on 28 November 1687 in Newbury and died between 23 February 1745/6 (will) and 26 April 1756 (probate). [3]

viii. Ruth Chute was born on 2 November 1695 in Rowley. [2] She died on 30 April 1776 in Byfield, Essex County. [3] She married William Hine of Marblehead after 15 November 1718 (intention in Rowley). [2] William was baptized on 29 March 1691 in Marblehead and died there by 4 January 1774. [3]

Dudley says Ruth married John Hurd of Marblehead. [7]

x. Hannah Chute was born on 8 July 1700 in Rowley. She died in June 1787 in Byfield Parish. She married Timothy Jackman.
