THOMAS SMITH (d. 1684/6) of Calvert
County

Thomas Smith died between 13 Jan 1684 and 2 Jan 1685/6. He married Alice Unknown. She died between 9 May 1698 and 22 Jul 1699. Alice is often said to be the daughter of Richard Acton from Condover,
Shropshire, England. The rather flimsy seeing evidence is that John Acton
mentioned his sister Eliza Smith in his will of 1688.
Thomas, Smith, merchant of Calvert county, signed his will on 13 Jan 1684/5.
It was proved on 2 Jan 1685/6. He mentioned his wife Alice, his youngest son
Joseph, his daughter Mary, his second son Nathan, his eldest son Thomas and
his daughters Margaret and Sarah, both of whom were under 18. His son-in-laws
Richard Harrison and Samuel Chew were his overseers and his wife Alice was the
executrix. He left his wife Alice his dwelling house and plantation for life,
except for 60 acres given to his son Joseph. [Ref,
p. 41]
Alice Smith Signed her will on 9 May 1698; it was proved on 22 Jul 1699. She
mentions her eldest son Thomas; her sons Nathan; her daughters Margaret Richardson
and Sarah Sparrow; her grandson Joseph Smith; her granddaughter Elizabeth, wife
of Benjamin Chew; her granddaughter Elizabeth Harrison; her grandchildren Samuel,
Mary and Richard Harrison. Her sons Thomas and Nathan were her executors. [Ref,
p. 1]
Children of Thomas Smith and Alice Unknown:
- Thomas Smith died between 14 Jan 1733/4 and Jul
1734. [Ref, p. 42] He is called
the eldest son in his father's will. He married Mary Unknown. [Ref,
p. 2] She probably died before 1734. [Ref,
p. 2]
Thomas's father left his eldest son Thomas his plantation, after the death
of Alice, and the "liberty to seed, plant and build" at will. [Ref,
p. 41] His mother left him "a negro" in her will. [Ref,
p. 41]
Thomas Smith, gentleman of Calvert County, signed his will in 14 Jan 1733/4;
it was proved in Jul 1734. [Ref,
p. 42]

- Nathan Smith died in 1711. He married Elizabeth
Coale.
- Joseph Smith is called the youngest son in his father's
will. He probably died between 13 Jan 1684 and 9 May 1698. He appears to have
died young and without heirs. [Ref,

Joseph inherited 60 acres near Sam Griffith's from his father. [Ref,
p. 1]
Joseph's father left his youngest son Joseph 60 acres of land, a cow and a
calf. [Ref, p. 41]

She died on 6 Mar 1693/4. [Ref,

- Mary Smith was probably born between 1664 and 1666. She
probably died between 13 Jan 1684 and 1690. She married Joseph Chew on 17
Dec 1685 [Ref, p. 1] in Herring
Creek, Anne Arundel Counry. [Ref,
p. 66] Joseph was the son of Col. Samuel and Anne (Ayres) Chew. [Ref,
p. 16] He was born in 1662/3 and died Feb 1704/5 in Anne Arundel County. [Ref,
p. 16] He married second Elizabeth (Hanslep) Battee in 1690. [Ref,
p. 16] Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Hanslep. [Ref,
p. 16] Mary left no children. [Ref,
p. 16]
Mary's father left his second daughter Mary 4000 pounds of tobacco. It appears
that she was over 18 and under 21 when he wrote his will. [Ref,
p. 41]
Joseph inherited a 450-acre tract of land called Sanetly. [Ref,
p. 16]
- Sarah Smith was born after 1666. She died in 1755
in Anne Arundel County. [Ref, p.
67] She married first Richard or Solomon Sparrow of Anne Arundel County [Ref,
p. 1] on 12 Jul 1690 [Ref, p. 18]
in Calvert County. [Ref, p. 67,
Solomon Sparrow] They had no children. [Ref,
p. 67] She married second Richard Galloway on 30 May or Jul 1719 in West River,
Anne Arundel County. [Ref, p. 67]
She married third Henry Hill on 14 Nov 11738 in Anne Arundel County. [Ref,
p. 67]
Sarah was under 18 when her father left her 3000 pounds of tobacco in his
will. [Ref, p. 41] Her mother left
Sarah Sparrow "a negro woman". [Ref,
p. 41]
Sarah signed her will on 19 Feb 1755; it was proved on 1 Mar 1755. She mentions
a granddaughter Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Sprgg, but she may be the granddaughter
of one of her husbands. [Ref, p.
67]
- Margaret Smith was born about 1672. She died
in Feb 1756, age 84. [Ref, p. 66]
She married William Richardson, Jr. [Ref,
p. 1] on 16 Jul 1681. [Ref, p. 17][Ref,
p. 66, 1689] William was the son of William and Elizabeth (Talbott) Richardson.
[Ref, p. 17] He was born on 26 Aug
1668 in Anne Arundel County. [Ref,
p. 66] He died on 13 Jul 1744 in Anne Arundel County. [Ref,
p. 66] He was buried on 15 Jul 1744 in the Quaker Burial Ground in West River,
Anne Arundel County. [Ref, p. 66]
Margaret was under 18 when her father left her 3000 pounds of tobacco in his

NATHAN SMITH (d. 1711) of Calvert County
Parents: Thomas Smith and Alice Unknown [Ref]
Nathan Smith is called the second son in his father's will. [Ref,
p. 1] He died in 1711. [Ref] He married Elizabeth
Coale. [Ref]
Nathan's father left his second son Nathan 4000 pounds of tobacco. [Ref,
p. 41] Hid mother left him "a negro man". [Ref,
p. 41]
On 30 Jul 1699 John Taylor, merchant of London, and Margaret his wife sold
Nathan Smith, merchant of Maryland, 475 acres called Moore's Plains in Prince
George's County. [Ref, p. 43]
Nathan Smith was a member of the Committee of the Society of Friends in 1700.
[Ref, p. 3] He was part owner of the
Sloop with Joseph Bearly. [Ref, p.
3]
Smith's Chance was surveyed for Nathan Smith on 2 Mar 1689; it contained 156
acres. [Ref, p. 66] It was resurveyed
and patented as Smith's Chance Resurveyed on 10 Dec 1705. [Ref,
p. 66] He purchased Moore's Plains in Prince George's County containing 457
acres; Mardyke in Calvert County containing 100 acres, Turners Pasture (or Gough's
Purchase) in Calvert County containing 250 acres; Lyons's Creek in Calvert County
containing 300 acres; land bought from Andrew Unknown and son John. [Ref,
p. 66] He bought a house on the north branch of the Patuxent River fromm John
Mills, planter, on 26 Jun 1706. It had one and a half acres of land. [Ref,
p. 3] He probably lived on Lyon's Creek. [Ref,
p. 66]
Nathan signed his will on 23 Nov 1710; it was probated on 30 Jan 1710/1. [Ref]
Children of Nathan Smith and Elizabeth Coale:
- Joseph Smith died before 19 May 1763.
He married Laurana (Leurana), the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Richardson,
[Ref] on 4 May 1710. [Ref,
p. 3] Laurana was the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Welsh) Richardson
of Anne Arundel County. [Ref, pp.
3, 71] She was born on 22 Jan 1693 in West River, Anne Arundel County. [Ref,
p. 71]
Joseph appears to have inherited 250 acres of Turners Pasture, 150 acres of
Smith's Chance and 50 Acres of Mardyke. [Ref,
p. 71]
Joseph signed his will on 30 Oct 1746. [Ref,
p. 71] It was proved on 19 May 1763. [Ref,
p. 71] He named his wife Laurana and six children. [Ref,
p. 71] Inventory was presented on 30 May 1763 and filed on 24 Oct 1763. [Ref,
p. 71]

was born in 1694. [Ref, p. 7] He
may have died without heirs by 4 Mar 1749 when his brother William owned 300
acres of Moore's Plains and what sounds like the house on Patuxent River.

Nathan inherited half of Moore's Plains and Chance. [Ref,
p. 3] He and his brother William jointly inherited the house and land on Patuxent
River. [Ref, p. 72]
- William Coale Smith was born in 1693 and
died in 1750. He married Jane Edmonston.
- Thomas Smith [Ref]
died before 1766 in North Carolina. [Ref,
p. 71] He married Elizabeth Rigden [Ref,
p. 66] on 2 Feb 1715 in Queen Anne's Parish in Prince George's County. [Ref,
p. 71] Elizabeth, the daughter of John Rigden of Prince George's County, was
born in Aug 1699. [Ref, p. 71]
Thomas inherited 100 acres where Dan Armiger dwelt. [Ref,
p. 3] He inherited Lyon's Creek after his brother Philip's death. [Ref,
p. 66] He moved to North Carolina before 1741. [Ref,
p. 71]
At one time Thomas was much in debt in Prince George's County, but in 1743
he bought 2,900 acres in North Carolina. [Ref,
p. 71]

died after about 1733. [Ref, p.
71] She married as his second wife William Selby, Jr. about 1710. [Ref,
p. 71] He died about 1733 in Prince George's County. [Ref,

p. 71]

married John Magruder [Ref,
p. 345] of Dunblane [Ref,
p. 460] in St. Barnabas Church in Prince George's county. [Ref,

- Sarah Smith [Ref]
was born about 1695. [Ref, p. 3]
She married Samuel Selby [Ref, p.
3] on 12 Dec 1717 in Anne Arundel County. [Ref,
p. 72] Samuel was the brother of her sister Elizabeth's husband. [Ref,
p. 72]
Sarah inherited a neck of land at Lyons Creek that her father bought from
Joseph Bearly. [Ref, p. 3]
- Mary Smith [Ref]
- Cassandra Smith was born in 1696. [Ref,
p. 3] She died between 30 Dec 1754, when she wrote her will, and 8 Feb 1755,
when it was proved. [Ref, p. 72]
She married John Giles, Jr. in Jan 1722/3. [Ref][Ref,
p. 3, 1722] John was the son of John Giles, gentleman of Anne Arundel County,
and Sarah Welsh. [Ref, p. 3] He
died in 1736 in Baltimore county. [Ref,
p. 72]
John lived at Upton Court in Baltimore County. [Ref,
p. 3]

- Philip Smith was born on 6 Sep 1673. [Ref]
He died fairly young and without heirs. [Ref,
p. 66]
Philip inherited the home place (Lyon's Creek) after his mother's death. [Ref,
pp. 3, 66] Lyon's Creek was then passed to his brother Thomas Smith. [Ref,
p. 66]
- Samuel Smith was born on 9 Apr 1676. [Ref]
Third Generation
WILLIAM COALE SMITH (1693 – 1750) of Prince George's
County.
Parents: Nathan Smith and Elizabeth
Coale
William Smith was born in 1693 and died in 1750. [Ref][Ref,
p. 3] He married first Jane Edmonston. He married
second Lucy Unknown [Ref, p. 4] before
4 Mar 1739. [Ref, p. 72] She died
in 1777.
William gave his age as 55 in an 18 Nov 1748 deposition. [Ref,
p. 72]
Archibald Edmonston of Prince George's County conveyed a tract of land called
Edmonston's Pastures to his son-in-law William Smith. [Ref,
p. 4]
William was of Prince George's County. [Ref,
p. 3] William's father left him half of a tract in Prince George's County called
Moore's Plains. [Ref, p. 4]
William was a Justice of the Peace of Prince George's County and a member of
the Quorum from 1743 to 1747. [Ref,
p. 4]
William signed his will on 4 Mar 1739/40; it was proved in Nov 1750. [Ref,
p. 4] He mentions his wife Lucy and their unborn child; sons Nathan, Archibald,
James, Philip, Benoni, Anthony; daughters Jane, the wife of Thomas Cleland,
Elizabeth, the wife of Benjamin White, Alice and Anna; son-in-law Joseph Belt,
the son of Benjamin Belt. [Ref, p.
45]
William's second wife Lucy signed her will on 10 Jan 1777; it was proved on
20 Sep 1777. [Ref, p. 4] She mentions
her sons Anthony, Joseph and William Smith; her daughters Alice Jones, Anna
Burgess, Lucy Norris and Susanna Smith [a daughter-in-law?]; her graddaughter
Amelia Burgess, Ann Cleland. [Ref,
p. 45]
