HUMPHREY COALE (1547 – 1624)

Parents: Unknown

Humphrey Coale was born in 1547. He was buried on 3-27-1624, age 77 at Tillingham Church, Essex, England. [Ref] He married first Mary Mott before 1598. [Ref] He married second Hester Unknown. [Ref]

He received his BA from Corpus Christi College, Oxford University in 1573. [Ref] He was a fellow of the college in 1574. [Ref]

He lived in Stepney, London 1579-1584. [Ref] He lived in Cheapside, London 1584-1588. [Ref] He lived in Tillingham, Essex after 1588. [Ref]

He was a rector of Anglican churches. [Ref] He was vicar of the church in Tillingham. [Ref] He was a farmer. [Ref]

Children of Humphrey Coale and Mary Mott:

  1. William Coale was born about 1598 in Essex. He died in 1669 in St. Mary County, MD. He married Sarah Unknown before 1632.

Children of Humphrey Coale and either Mary Mott or Hester Unknown: (Martha is probably the daughter of Mary; the order of the sons is correct. [Ref])

  1. Thomas Coale died in Jan 1641. [Ref] He lived in Bradwell-on-Sea, about three miles north of Tillingham. [Ref] He was a farmer ("yeoman" or freeholder). [Ref]. He married Rebecca Unknown and had two daughters. [Ref]
  2. Richard Coale received his MA from Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1627. [Ref] He was rector in Great Oakley, Essex 1627-1629. [Ref] He was rector in Little Oakley, Essex 1629-1641. [Ref] He had four sons. [Ref]
  3. John Coale was buried on 16 Jul 1646 in Tillingham. [Ref] He had two children. [Ref]
  4. Martha Coale died after 12-14-1638. [Ref] She married first James Walker before 7-9-1616. [Ref] He died on 1-30-1617, age 35. [Ref] He was the rector of Great Oakley in 1613. [Ref] Martha married second Micaiah Wood. [Ref] He received his BA from Oxford, probably in 1587. [Ref] He was the rector of Great Oakley in 1617. [Ref] He died in 1628. [Ref] Martha married third Unknown Hunt in or before 1630. [Ref]
  5. Mary Coale died after 11-6-1638. [Ref] She married John George of Writtle, about 20 miles west of Tillingham. [Ref] He was a yeoman and probably died in 1638. [Ref] Mary probaby had a son George who migrated to Virginia in 1635 and possibly a daughter. [Ref]

Generation 2

WILLIAM COALE (abt 1598 – 1669)

Parents: Humphrey Coale and Mary Mott

William Coale was born about 1598 in Essex. [Ref] He died in 1669 in St. Marys County, Maryland. [Ref] He married Sarah Unknown before 1632.

He migrated to Virginia in 1618 and lived in Elizabeth City (county), Warwick Co. and probably Lower Norfolk Counry (the part of the the latter now in Norfolk County). [Ref] He went to Maryland in 1651 or before and settled at St. Jeromes, St. Marys. [Ref]

He was a farmer. [Ref]

Children of William Coale and Sarah Unknown:

  1. Susan Coale was probably born before 1633. [Ref] She died before 1669. [Ref] She may have married Richard Benton. [Ref]
  2. Richard Coale may have been a son-in-law, possibly Richard Benton. [Ref]
  3. Sarah Coale married Elias Beach before 1669. [Ref] She probably had a daughter. [Ref]
  4. William Coale was probably born in 1633 or before. He died on 10-30-1678. He married first Hester Unknown. He married second Hannah Unknown. He married third Elizabeth Thomas.
  5. John Coale died in 1687. [Ref] He married, possibly second, Ann Unknown. [Ref] He had children. [Ref]

Generation 3

WILLIAM COALE (d. 1678)

Parents: William Coale and Sarah Unknown

William Coale was probably born in 1633 or before. [Ref] He died on 10-30-1678. [Ref] He married first Hester Unknown. [Ref] He married second Hannah Unknown, the widow of Richard Galloway. [Ref] Hannah died on 11-20-1669. [Ref] He married third Elizabeth Thomas about 1670. [Ref]

William was a farmer and a Quaker minister. [Ref] He lived in West River, Anne Arundel, Maryland. [Ref]

Children of William Coale and Hester Unknown:

  1. William Coale was born on 9-21-1655 and died in 1700. [Ref] He married Elizabeth (Thurston) Skipwith in 1685. [Ref] Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Thurston and widow of George Skipwith, died in 1710. [Ref] He had a son who died in infancy. [Ref]

Children or William Coale and Hannah Unknown:

  1. William Coale was born on 10-20-1667 and died in 1715. [Ref] He married Elizabeth Sparrow on 7-30-1689. [Ref] Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Sparro of the Cliffs, Calvert County, MD. [Ref] He had children.

Elizabeth Coale was born on 30 Aug 1671. [Ref] She died about 1746. [Ref, p. 66] She married Nathan Smith. [Ref][Ref, p. 460]

Inventory on Elizabeth's estate was taken on 9 Dec 1746. [Ref, p. 66]
