LIEUTENANT SAMUEL STICKNEY (bp. 1631–1709), son of Lieutenant William Stickney and Elizabeth Dawson
JULIAN SWAN (say 1636–1674), daughter of Richard Swan and Ann Spofford
Samuel Stickney was baptized on 6 March 1630/1 in Cottingham, Yorkshire. [1][2] He died in 1709 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts. [3] He married first Julian Swan on 18 April 1653 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts. [3][4, Julian's last name missing] He married second Prudence (Leaver) Gage on 6 April 1674 in Bradford. [5, no maiden name][3] Prudence married first Benjamin Gage. She died on 26 October 1716, age 72, in Bradford. [5]
Julian Swan was born say 1636. She died by 6 April 1674.
Richard Swan left a bequest to Elizabeth, Samuel, and Sarah, the children of his son-in-law and daughter Stickney, in his will of 25 April 1678. [6, 3: 225–30]
When Samuel married the widow of Benjamin Gage, the court ordered he give security for 20 pounds to be paid to Benjamin's son John when he came of age. The September 1674 court at Ipswich noted that Samuel gave as bond a quarter of his farm in Bradford containing 200 acres. [6, 5: 399]
On 7 January 1682/3 Prudence was dismissed from the church at Haverhill and admitted to the church in Bradford. [3]
Samuel took the freeman's oath on 11 October 1682. [3] He was a selectman in Bradford in September 1683. [6, 9: 104] He was surveyor of highways and fences in 1684, 1692, and 1707 to 1708. [3] He was a representative from Bradford on 8 May 1689 and 12 February 1689/90. [3] He was on the grand jury on 13 Apr 1697, the trial jury from 1701 to 1708, and was appointed tythingman in 1704. [3]
Samuel is referred to as Lieutenant from 1691 in the Bradford records. [3]
By a deed of 28 January 1703/4 "for his dutifulness to me," he gave land in Bradford to his son Samuel. By a deed of 4 May 1704, he left land in Bradford to his son William. [3]
Prudence Stickney of Bradford, widow, made her will on 30 August 1716; it was proved on 19 November 1716. She left her estate, which mainly consisted of land left to her by her son Jonathan Stickney, deceased, to her son John Gage. [3]
Children of Samuel Stickney and Julian Swan:
i. Elizabeth Stickney was born on 9 May 1661 in Rowley. [4] She married Daniel Tenney on 21 July or 17 August 1680 in Bradford. [5] She died on 28 April 1694 in Rowley. [4]
ii. Samuel Stickney was born on 5 April 1663 in Rowley. He was baptized on 4 April 1675. He died on 30 December 1714. He married Mary Haseltine.
iii. William Stickney was born on 21 October 1665 in Rowley. [4] He apparently died young.
iv. Sarah Stickney was born on 20 October 1667 in Rowley. [4] She was baptized on 10 November 1667 in Rowley. [7, 104] She died on 15 April 1689 in Bradford. [5]
Children of Samuel Stickney and Prudence Gage:
v. William Stickney was born on 27 January 1674/[5?] in Bradford. [5] He was baptized on 4 April 1675 in Rowley. [4][7] He died on 21 February 1706 or [probably] 1707, age 32, in Bradford. [5] He married Anne Haseltine on 4 September 1701 in Bradford. [5] Anne married second Samuel Hunt on 31 March 1709 in Bradford. [5]
Anne posted bond on her deceased husband's estate on 19 May 1707. Captain Haseltine concluded and agreement on behalf of his grandchildren and Samuel Hunt who married his daughter Stickney in May 1710. [8]
vi. Thomas Stickney was born on 19 March 1676/7 in Bradford. [5] He was baptized on 3 June 1677 in Rowley. [4] He drowned there on 12 June 1689 in Bradford. [5]
vii. Jonathan Stickney was born on 11 February 1679 in Bradford. [5] He was baptized on 11 April 1680 in Rowley. [4][7] He died before 30 August 1716.
