SAMUEL SPOFFORD (1652–1744), son of John Spofford and Elizabeth Scott
SARAH BURPEE (c. 1661–1729), daughter of Thomas Burpee and Sarah Kelly
Samuel Spofford was born on 31 January 1652 in Rowley. [1] He died on 1 January 1743/4 at the house of his daughter, Mrs. Stickney of Byfield. [2][3] He married Sarah, the daughter of Thomas Burbee, on 5 December 1676 in Rowley. [1]
Sarah Burpee was born on 5 February 1660. [4] She died on 18 November 1729, age 68, in Bradford. [5]
Samuel Spofford, yeoman of Rowley, made his will on 16 August 1683; it was proved on 5 February 1743/4. He mentioned his sons Thomas and Samuel Spofford and his daughters Mehitable, the wife of Nathaniel Harriman of Rowley, Sarah Haseltine of Bradford, Hannah Adams of Rowley, Ruth Brocklebank of Rowley, Mary Wood of Bradford, Lydia Thurston of Rowley, and Elizabeth Stickney of Rowley, and his grandson Samuel Ames, the son of his deceased daughter Abigail Ames, late of Rowley. He named his son-in-laws John Brocklebank, Jonathan Thurston, and Benjamin Stickney, all of Rowley, his executors. Inventory was taken on 20 February 1743/4 and Benjamin Stickney made oath to it on 2 April 1744. [3]
Children of Samuel Spofford and Sarah Burpee:
i. Samuel Spofford was born on 15 September 1677 in Rowley. [1] He was buried there on 23 September 1677. [1]
ii. Thomas Spofford was born on 16 March 1678/9 in Rowley. [1] He married Bethiah Hazeltine after 15 November 1701 (intention) in Rowley. [1][2]
Thomas and Bethiah moved to Boxford and then to Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut. [2]
iii. Mary [Sarah?] Spofford was born on 7 August 1682 in Rowley. [1] Sarah Spofford was baptized on 24 September 1682 in Rowley. [1] She married Robert Hazeline on 10 June 1702. [2]
Either Mary's birth record or Sarah's baptismal record must be incorrect.
iv. Hannah Spofford was born on 17 February 1684 in Rowley. [1] She died in 1775. [2] She married Isaac Adams. [2]
v. Ruth Spofford was born on 18 November 1687 in Rowley. [1] She married Samuel Brocklebank. [2]
vi. Samuel Spofford was born in February 1689 in Rowley. He married Sarah Stickney.
vii. Mary Spofford was born on 15 June 1692 in Rowley. [1] She married David Wood of Boxford after 5 February 1701/2 in Rowley. [1]
viii. Abigail Spofford was born on 9 March 1693/4 in Rowley. [1] She died by 16 August 1738. She married Samuel Ames after 17 May 1718 (intention). [2]
ix. Mehitable Spofford was born on 19 or 20 October 1697 in Rowley. [1] She died between 16 August 1753, when she wrote her will, and 19 January 1756, when it was proved. [6] She married Nathaniel Harriman on 25 September 1720. [2][6] Lieutenant Nathaniel, the son of Jonathan and Margaret (Elithorp) Harriman, was born on 31 December 1696 in Rowley, baptized there on 3 January 1696/7, and died on 13 October 1744/5 in Louisburg, Nova Scotia. [6]
x. Lydia Spofford was born on 25 April 1700 in Rowley. She died there on 25 July 1753. She married first Jonathan Thurson. She married second Deacon William Fisk.
xi. Elizabeth Spofford was born on 30 April 1702 in Rowley. [1] She died on 10 January 1789. [2] She married Benjamin Stickney after 25 January 1730/1 (intention). [2] He died on 12 March 1756. [2]
