SAMUEL SAWYER (1646–1718), son of William Sawyer and Ruth Unknown

Samuel, the son of William Sawyer, was born on 22 November 1646. [1] He died on 11 February 1718. [2] He married Mary Emery on 13 March 1670/1 in Newbury. [3]

Mary was the daughter of John Emery. [2] She was born on 24 June 1652 in Newbury. [3]

Mary's father refers to her as Mary Sawyer in his will of 3 August 1693.

Estates in Newbury were inventoried to compute taxes under Andros in 1686. Samuel owned a house, eight acres of plowland, five acres of meadow, four acres of pasture, two horses, two oxen, five cows, three young cows, ten sheep, and two hogs. [4, 206]

Children of Samuel Sawyer and Mary Emery: All born in Newbury. [2]

i. Mary Sawyer was born on 20 January 1672. [2]

ii. Samuel Sawyer was born on 5 June 1674. [2] He died between 20 April and 6 May 1723. He married Abigail, the daughter of Joseph Goodridge, on 17 December 1702 in Newbury. [2] She died on 14 October 1722. [2]

Samuel Sawyer, husbandman of Newbury, being very sick, made his will on 20 April 1723; probate was on 6 May 1723. He named his sons Samuel, Joseph, Edmund, and Jacob and his daughters Martha, Abigail, and Mary. He named his uncle John Emory one of his executors. [5]

iii. John Sawyer was born on 15 March 1675/6. He died on 27 March 1756 in Newbury. He married first Mary (Brown) Merrill. He married second Sarah Wells.

Appleton says this John died young and a second John was born on 23 February 1683. However, there is no record of a second John's birth and he would be young to marry on 25 December 1700.

iv. Joshua Sawyer [2] He married Elizabeth ___. [2]

v. Hannah Sawyer was born on 12 January 1679. [2]

vi. Josiah Sawyer was born on 20 January 1681. [2] He married Tirza, the daughter of Thomas Bartlett, on 22 January 1708 in Newbury. [2]

vii. Daughter Sawyer was born on 7 March 1685 and died on 26 March 1685 in Newbury. [2]

viii. Benjamin Sawyer was born on 27 October 1686. [2] He married Elizabeth ___. [2]
