JOHN EMERY (c. 1628–1693), son of John Emery and Alice Grantham
John Emery was born about 1628 in England. [1] He died between 3 August and 26 September 1693. He married Mary Unknown. [2]
Emery states that John married Mary Webster, the daughter of John and Mary (Shatswell) Webster, on 2 October 1648 [1] Torrey argues that this is not true. [3]
He was made a freeman on 30 May 1660. [1]
He was a selectman in Newbury in 1670 to 1673. [1] He was a tythingman in 1679. [1] He was a way warden in 1679. [1]
John was a member of the Woodman faction in the Newbury church conflict. [1]
John made his will on 3 August 1693; it was proved on 26 September 1693. He mentioned his wife Mary, his sons John, Stephen, Joseph and Samuel Emery and his daughters Mary Sawyer, Hannah Bartlett, Sarah Bailey, Bethiah Bodwell, Abigail Ingalls, Judith Huse, Lydia Emery, and Elizabeth Emery. [4]

ii. Hannah Emery was born on 26 April 1654. She married Richard Bartlett on 18 November 1673. [1]Richard, the son of Richard and Abigail Bartlett, was born on 21 February 1649. [1]
iii. John Emery was born on 12 September 1656. He died on 14 July 1730. [1] He married first Mary Sawyer. She died on 3 November 1699. [1] He married second Abigail Bartlett on 27 May 1700. [1] He married third March March on 7 December 17123. [1]
iv. Bethiah Emery was born on 15 October 1658. She married Henry Bodwell on 4 Mary 1681. [1]
v. Sarah Emery was born on 26 February 1660. She died on 1 April 1694. [1] She married Isaac Bailey on 13 June 1683. [1] He married second Rebecca Bartlett on 5 September 1700. [1]
vi. Joseph Emery was born on 23 March 1662/3. He died on 22 September 1721 in Andover. [1] He died on 22 September 1721 in Andover. [1] He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Abraham and Abigail (Webster) Merrill on 2 October 1693. [1] Elizabeth was the granddaughter of her father's stepmother. [1]
vii. Ensign Stephen Emery was born on 16 September 1666. He died on 1 February 1746/7. [1] He married Ruth Jacques on 29 November 1692. [1] Ruth, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Knight) Jacques, was born on 14 April 1672 and died on 9 January 176.4 [1]
viii. Abigail Emery was born on 16 January 1668. She married Henry Ingalls on 6 January 1688. [1]
ix. Reverend Samuel Emery was born on 19 or 20 December 1670. He died on 28 December 1724 in Biddeford, Maine. [1] He married Tabitha, the daughter of Francis Littlefield, Jr. of Wells. [1] She died on 27 April 1736. [1]
Samuel graduated from Harvard College in 1691. [1] He was minister at Wells, Maine. [1]
x. Judith Emery was born on 5 February 1672. She married Abel Huse. [1] Abel, the son of Abel and Mary (Sears) Huse, was born on 19 February 1665 and died on 11 March 1758 in Newbury. [1]
xi. Lydia Emery was born on 19 February 1674. She married Joseph Brown in 1696. [1]
xii. Elizabeth Emery was born on 31 January or 3 or 31[!] February 1679. She married John Kelley, Jr. on 6 November 1696. [1] John was born on 17 June 1668 and died on 3 November 1735. [1]
xiii. Josiah Emery was born on 28 February 1680. He died on 16 March 1718. [1] He married Abigail, the daughter of Dr. Caleb and Ruth (Morse) Moody, on 25 November 1714. [1] She married second John Stickney, Jr. [1] She married third Captain William Johnson. [1] She married fourth Joseph Swasey. [1]
Isaiah is not mentioned in his father's will. [4]
