WILLIAM SAWYER (c. 1613–1702)

William Sawyer was born about 1613. [1] He died in 1702. [1] He married Ruth Unknown. [1][2] She was born say 1626.

William Sawyer was in Salem by 1640. [2] He was in Wenham in 1643. [2] He was in Newbury in 1644. [2]

William was on a 10 January 1652 list of inhabitants of Newbury who were not freeholders, but could purchase the privilege of commonage. [3, 94]

William was chosen a fence viewer on 7 March 1663, 2 April 1666, 3 April 1669/70 and 19 March 1672/3. He was chosen a surveyor of highways on 5 March 1676/7. He was chosen a tythingman on 31 March 1679, 24 March 1679, and 22 March 1685/6. [3, 111, 115, 117, 118]

Estates in Newbury were inventoried to compute taxes under Andros in 1686. William owned two houses, 12 acres of plowland, 12 acres of meadow, a horse, four oxen, four cows, four young cows, nine sheep, and three hogs. [3, 206]

i. John Sawyer was born on 24 August 1645. [1][2] He died on 18 February 1676. [2 in 1689] He married Sarah Poore of Newbury on 18 February 1675. [1][2] Sarah was the daughter of John Poore. [1] She married second Joseph Bayley, Sr. on 27 November 1707. [1]

ii. Samuel Sawyer was born on 22 November 1646. He died on 11 February 1718. He married Mary Emery.

iii. Bitfield Sawyer [2]

Appleton does not mention Bitfield. [1]

iv. Ruth Sawyer was born on 16 September 1648. [1][2]

v. Mary Sawyer was born on 23 February 1649/50. [1][2] She died on 24 June 1659. [2]

vi. Sarah Sawyer was born on 20 November 1651. [1][2] She married Joshua Brown on 15 January 1688. [2]

vii. Hannah Sawyer was born on 23 February 1653/4. [1][2] She died on 20 January 1659. [2]

viii. William Sawyer was born on 1 February 1655/6.[1][2] He died in June 1718 in Wells. [See his wife's entry.] He married as her second husband Sarah Littlefield.

William was a soldier in the Narragansett campaign in 1675. [1] He moved to Wells, Maine. [1]

ix. Frances Sawyer was born on 24 March 1657/8. [1][2] He died on 7 February 1659. [2]

x. Mary Sawyer was born on 29 July 1660. [1][2] She married John Emery, Jr. on 13 June 1683. [2]

xi. Stephen Sawyer was born on 25 April 1663. [1][2] He died on 8 June 1753. [1][2] He married Ann Titcomb in 1686. [2] Ann was born on 7 June 1666. [2] She died on 1 October 1750. [1]

xii. Hannah Sawyer was born on 11 January 1664/5. [1][2] She died on 28 August 1683. [2]

xiii. Frances Sawyer was born on 3 November 1670. [1][2]
