MATTHEW PETTINGILL (bp. 1678–1756), son of Matthew Pettingill and Sarah Noyes

JOANNA FRENCH (1683–aft. 1756), daughter of Samuel French and Esther Jackman


Matthew Pettingill was baptized on 29 November 1678. [1] He died on 24 November 1756 in Salisbury. [2] He married Johanna French after 23 October 1703 (intention) in Newbury. [1][3]

Joanna, the daughter of Samuel and Esther French, was born on 16 December 1683 in Salisbury. [1][2] She died after 19 May 1756.

Matthew was a weaver. [1]

Matthew sold land in Newbury on 27 April 1721. He bought 11 acres in Salisbury on 10 January 1721/2. He was admitted to the Salisbury church on 28 July 1723. [1]

Matthew bought land in Hampton, New Hampshire on 20 June 1738. [1]

Matthew Pettingill of Salisbury made his will on 19 May 1756. It was proved on 6 December 1756. He left his son Samuel his homestead in Salisbury and land, "all of my flock of creatures of all sorts," a featherbed and bedding, a gun, his sword, a chest, a loom and tackling and his husbandry tools. He left his son Abraham £6-13-04 and his clothes and he left his son Benjamin £5-06-08. He left his daughters Judith and Esther four pounds each and his daughter Mercy £6-13-04 and his great brass kettle. He left ten shillings to be divided among the children of his deceased daughter Joanna Worcester. He left his wife Joanna a third of his real estate for life, two cows and his household stuff. He named his son Samuel his executor. Inventory was taken on 28 December 1756 and presented on 21 February 1757; it amounted to £318-00-00. [4]

i. Abraham Pettingill was born on 4 December 1704 in Newbury. [3] He married Hannah French on 29 February 1727/8 in Salisbury. [2]

ii. Benjamin Pettingill was born on 15 May 1707 in Newbury. He died on 30 September 1756 in Plaistow, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He married Elizabeth Stickney.

iii. Joanna Pettingill was born in July 1709 in Newbury. [3] She married Daniel Worcester on 29 August 1727 in Salisbury. [3][2]

iv. Judith Pettingill was born on 28 October 1711 in Newbury. [3] She married Timothy Davis on 18 November 1736 in Salisbury. [2]

i. Rebecca Pettingill was born on 23 July 1714 in Newbury. [3] She died on 2 July 1719 in Newbury. [3]

i. Matthew Pettingill was born on 8 November 1716 in Newbury. [3] He died on 2 September 1736 in Salisbury. [2]

i. Samuel Pettingill was born on 10 June 1719 in Newbury. [3] He died about 1774. [1] He married Mary Moulton on 7 May 1751. [1] Mary, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Noyes) Moulton, was born on 14 July 1731. [1]

i. Esther Pettingill was born on 23 May 1721 in Salisbury. [2] She was baptized there on 19 May 1723. [2] She married John Batchelder of Hampton on 24 September 1740 in Salisbury. [2] John, the son of John and Abigail (Cram) Batchelder, was born on 5 October 1719 and died on 25 September 1792 in Raymond. [1]

John and Esther lived at Hampton Falls, New Hampshire and Kensington. [1]

i. Mary Pettingill was born on 14 September 1724 in Salisbury. [2] She married as his second wife [her first cousin] Samuel Pettingill on 14 September 1724. [1] Samuel, the son of Cutting Pettingill, died on 10 September 1759 from falling off the steeple of the Old South Church in Newburyport. [1] He married first Mary Knight. [1]
