BENJAMIN PETTINGILL (1707–1756), son of Matthew Pettingill and Joanna French

ELIZABETH STICKNEY (d. 1762)


Benjamin, the son of Matthew and Johanna Pettingill, was born on 15 May 1707 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. [1, 1: 396][2] He died on 30 September 1756 in Plaistow, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. [3] He married Elizabeth Stickney.

A Newbury record says, "Benjamin, jr., and Elisabeth Stickne [at Haverhill. dup.], Dec. 30, 1729." [1, 2: 388] A New Hampshire record says that he married her "about 1744" in Plaistow. [4]

Note: The Benjamin who was the son of Nathaniel Pettingill, Sr., born on 10 September 1707 in Newbury, died there on 14 September 1775, age 68 years and four days. [1, 1: 396; 2: 690]

Elizabeth Stickney is probably the Elizabeth Pettingill of Kingston who married as his second wife Lieutenant Samuel Samborn of Kingston on 4 August 1757 in Kingston. [3][5] This Elizabeth died on 16 October 1762. [5] Samuel, the son of Captain Jonathan and Elizabeth (Sherburne) Samborn, was born on 7 September 1694 in Hampton and died on 8 April 1769. [5] He married first Elizabeth (Folsom) Concord, the daughter of Peter Folsom, on 19 August 1718. [5] She died on 8 April 1756. [5]

Benjamin was a tailor. [2]

Benjamin was admitted to full communion in the Newbury church on 31 December 1727. [2]

Benjamin bought land in the part of Haverhill that became Plaistow. [2] He and Elizabeth were dismissed from the church at Newbury to the church in Plaistow on 31 May 1756. [2]

Administration on the estate of Benjamin Pettingill was granted to his widow Elizabeth on 24 November 1756. [2] Inventory was taken on 18 February 1757. [2]

i. Rebecca Pettingill was born on 21 December 1730 in Newbury. [1, 1: 401][2]

ii. Benjamin Pettingill was born on 6 July 1734 in Haverhill. [2] He died on 15 March in Salisbury, New Hampshire. [2] He married first Martha, the daughter of John Pemberton, on 11 February 1755 in Haverhill. [2] He married second as her second husband Mehitable, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Emerson) Kimball. [2] She was born on 28 Augusts 1739 and died on 23 April 1812 in Salisbury. [2] She married first Thomas Hale in 1755. [2] He died in 1756. [2]

Benjamin was a soldier in the Crown Point Expedition in 1757. [2] He and Mehitable lived in Plaistow. [2]

iii. Matthew Pettingill was born on 28 October 1735 in Haverhill. [2] He married first Sarah Colton of Plaistow on 7 December 1759. [2] He married second Sarah Colby. [2]

Matthew was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was referred to as "captain." [2] He lived in Salisbury and Springfield, New Hampshire. [2]

iv. David Pettingill was born on 1 March 1738/9 in Haverhill. [2] He married Betsey Heath in May 1760. [2] She died on 12 January 1831, age 91. [2]

David was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was referred to as "captain." [2]

v. Andrew Pettingill was born on 25 February 1741/2 in Haverhill. [2] He died on 12 December 1777. [2] He married Abigail Greeley on 23 April 1769 in Salisbury, Massachusetts. [2] She married second Peter Severance on 20 September 1779. [2]

Andrew was a first lieutenant at the Battle of Bennington. He was wounded and died from the effects of this. [2]

vi. Elizabeth Pettingill was born on 6 June 1744 in Haverhill. [2] She died on 18 July 1818. [2] She married Jacob Garland. [2] He died on 30 September 1797, age 59. [2]

Jacob was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of Bennington. [2]

vii. Joanna (or James) Pettingill was born on 17 August 1745 in Plaistow. [4, 7][2] She/He died on 14 January 1745/[6?] in Plaistow. [4][2]

viii. Hannah (or Joanna) Pettingill was born on 17 January 1747 in Plaistow. She died on 5 December 1793, probably in Salisbury. married Joseph Calef.

ix. James Pettingill was born on 3 May 1750 in Plaistow. [4][2]
