JOHN EMERY (bp. 1599–1683)

ALICE GRANTHAM

Walter Grantham lived in West Dean, Wiltshire by 1600. He died between 26 June 1620 and 5 February 1622/3. He married Eleanor ___. She was probably the widow Grantam who was buried on 7 March 1629/30 in West Dean. She was probably the mother of all his children. [4]

John, the son of John Emery, was baptized on 29 March 1599 in Romsey, Hampshire. [1] He died on 3 November 1683 in Newbury. [1][2][3] He married first Alice, the daughter of Walter and Eleanor Grantham of West Dean, Wiltshire, on 26 June 1620 in Whiteparish, Wiltshire. [1][4] She does not appear in any New England record. [1] He married subsequently Martha (Shatswell) Webster, the widow of John Webster of Ipswich, on 29 October 1647 in Newbury. [1][2] She died on 28 April 1694. [2]

Emery says that John's second marriage was on 29 October 1650; Torry argues it took place on 29 October 1647. [2][5]

John and his brother Anthony emigrated in the James in 1635. [2]

John was a carpenter and innkeeper. [1]

John was a freeman on 2 June 1642. [1]

On 29 September 1646 John was sentenced to be whipped for "miscarriage with the wife of Henry Travers," or pay a fine of three pounds and a witness fee to Christopher Bartlett. [1]

John made his will on 1 May 1680, mentioning that he was 83 years old. He left bequests to his daughter Ebenezer Hoag, his son Jonathan Emery, his wife Mary, his grandchild Mary Emerson. He named his sons John Emery and Abraham Merrill. It was proved on 27 November 1683. Inventory was taken the same day and amounted to £263 11s. [1]

He got into trouble with authorities and was fined for being welcoming to Quakers. [2]

Children of John Emery and Alice Grantham:

i. Alice Emery was born say 1622. [1] She married John Chater by 1644. [1]

ii. Eleanor Emery was baptized on 7 November 1624 in Romsey. She married John Bailey by 1641. [1]

iv. John Emery was baptized on 3 February 1628/8. He died between 3 August and 26 September 1693. He married Mary Unknown.

v. Anne Emery was baptized on 18 March 1632/3 in Romsey. [1] She died on 31 March 1687. [2] She married John Ordway on 23 November 1648 in Newbury. [1][2] He was born in 1620 and died after 1702. [2]

Children of John Emery and Martha Shatswell:

vi. Ebenezer Emery was born on 14 or 16 September 1648 in Newbury. [3] She married John Hoag on 21 Apr 1669. [2] He died in 1728. [2]

Ebenezer is usually thought of as a man's name, but as Ebenezer was a place, it can also be a woman's name.

vii. Jonathan Emery was born on 13 May 1652 in Newbury. [3] He died on 29 September 1723 in Newbury. [2] He married Mary, the daughter of Mr. Edward Woodman on 29 November 1676. [2] She died on 13 September 1723 in Newbury. [2]

Jonathan was a soldier and was wounded in the Narragansett fight in King Philip's War on 19 December 1675. [2]
