LIEUTENANT JOHN DRESSER (c. 1639–1724), son of John Dresser and Mary Unknown

MARTHA THORLEY (say 1642–1700), daughter of Richard Thorley and Jane Unknown


John Dresser was born about 1639. He died on 14 March 1724. [1] He married first Martha Thorley on 27 November 1662 in Rowley. [1] He married second Rebecca (___) Dickinson on 7 January 1701 in Rowley. [1] She died on 2 April 1718 in Rowley. [1] She married previously James Dickinson James, the son of Thomas Dickinson, was born on 6 September 1640 in Rowley and died there on 26 June 1698. [1]

John's grandson Richard Thurston wrote, "March 14, 1724, my venerable grandfather Dresser d. in his 85th year." [2]

Martha Thorley was born say 1642. She died on 29 June 1700 in Rowley. [1]

John lived in Rowley. On 2 November 1667 he was appointed to a committee to see that the Sabbath was observed. [3, 151] He was a selectman in 1687. [3, 160] He was a selectman in 1687. [3, 160]

John was on the trial jury at the September 1668, September 1672, and March 1680 quarterly courts in Ipswich. [4, 4: 46; 5: 79; 6: 332]

John was referred to as a sergeant in 1689 and a lieutenant in 1701. [3, 203, 350]

John was a deputy to the General Court in Boston in 1691, 1692, 1700, and 1704 to 1706. [3, 383]

Children of John Dresser and Martha Thorley:

i. John Dresser was born on 4 December 1663 in Rowley. [1] He died on 17 November 1736 in Rowley. [5] He married [his future stepsister] Mercy, the daughter of James and Rebecca Dickinson on 17 June 1687 in Rowley. [1] She died on 12 April 1751, age 82, in Rowley. [5]

ii. Mary Dresser was born on 14 July 1667 in Rowley. She married Daniel Thurston.

iii. Martha Dresser was born on 1 August 1671 in Rowley. [1] She married Anthony Potter on 11 July 1695 in Ipswich. [5][6]

iv. Jonathan Dresser was born on 27 June 1674 in Rowley. [1] He married Sarah Leaver on 31 October 1699 in Rowley. [1] Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Leaver, Jr. [5]

Jonathan and Sarah moved to Pomfret, Connecticut. [5]

v. Jane Dresser was baptized on 4 June 1676 in Rowley. [1] She married John Perley on 13 July 1698 in Rowley. [1]

vi. Sarah Dresser was born on 4 or 7 April 1678 in Rowley. [1] She married Richard Boynton on 24 December 1701 in Rowley. [1]

vii. Richard Dresser was born on 24 June 1679 in Rowley. [1] He married Mercy Peabody of Topsfield on 29 June 1708. [5]

Richard and Mercy moved to Woodstock and Killingly, Connecticut. [5]

viii. Nathaniel Dresser was born on 27 August 1681 in Rowley. [1] He married Elizabeth Wentworth on 13 November 1707 in Rowley. [1] Elizabeth, the daughter of Silvanus Wentworth, died in 1772. [5]

ix. Lydia Dresser was born on 14 July 1684 in Rowley. [1] She died there in 1689.

x. Elizabeth Dresser was born on 16 February 1685 in Rowley. [1] She married Robert Day on 4 April 1706 in Rowley. [1] Robert may have been the son of Thomas and Ann (Woodward) Day, born on 14 March 167/9 in Ipswich. [5]

Robert and Elizabeth lived in Killingly, Connecticut. [5]
