JOHN DRESSER (c. 1606–1672)

MARY UNKNOWN (d. aft. 1672)


John Dresser was born about 1606. He died on 19 or 29 April 1672 in Rowley. [1][2, 5: 125, buried 29 April] His wife was named Mary.

John deposed that he was about 62 on 24 November 1668. [2, 4: 71]

John was a shoemaker. [3]

John was on the trial jury at the March 1658 and March 1660 quarterly courts in Ipswich. [2, 2: 61, 195]

John Dresser made his will on 5 March 1671/2; it was proved on 1 May 1672. He left most of his estate to his wife Mary, his sons John and Samuel, and his daughter Elizabeth Dresser. He mentioned that he had already given his son John a considerable estate when he married. He also left bequests to his apprentice Daniel Button; John (the eldest son), Mary, and Martha, the children of his son John; and Samuel's two daughters. He named John and Samuel his executors. Inventory was taken on 26 April 1672 and attested to on 1 May 1672. It amounted to £449-07-00. [2, 5: 39–40][4]

Children of John Dresser and Mary Unknown:

i. Lieutenant John Dresser was born about 1639. He died on 14 March 1724. He married Martha Thorley.

ii. Mary Dresser was born on 23 April 1642 in Rowley. [1] She was buried there on 27 November 1659. [1]

iii. Samuel Dresser was born on 10 February 1643/4 in Rowley. [1] He died suddenly there on 28 December 1704. [1] He married Mary, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Bradley) Leaver, on 9 December 1668 in Rowley. [1][3] Mary was born on 5 September 1649 in Rowley and died there on 21 August 1714. [3]

iv. Jonathan Dresser was born on 8 January 1646/7 in Rowley. [1] He was buried there on 10 December 1659. [1]

v. Elizabeth Dresser was born on 10 March 1650 in Rowley. [1] She married Jonathan Hopkinson on 10 June 1680 in Rowley. [1] Jonathan, the son of Michael and Ann Hopkinson, was born on 9 April 1643 in Rowley and died there on 11 February 1718/9. [1]
