JOHN BARKER (1758–1828), son of Jedidiah Barker and Sarah Stickney

MARY JACKMAN (bp. 1761–1842), daughter of Timothy Jackman and Mary Thurston


John, the son of Jedidiah Barker, was born on 21 April 1758 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts. [1] He died on 22 October 1828, probably in Bethel, Oxford County. [2] John of Bradford married Mary Jackman of Byfield-Rowley on 27 March 1781 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. [3]

Mary, the daughter of Timothy Jackman, was baptized on 21 November 1761 in Newbury. [3] Mary, the wife of John Barker, died on 19 January 1842, probably in Bethel. [2]

John and Mary are buried in the Skillingston Cemetery in Bethel. [2]

Mary is referred to as Mary, the wife of John Barker, in her father's will of 1787.

John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. [4] He moved to Bethel in 1804. [4] He was a town officer there in 1806 and on a committee of safety in 1812. [5]

Administration of the estate of John Barker, late of Bethel, yeoman, was granted to Samuel Barker of Bethel, gentleman, on 6 January 1829. [6]

i. Mary Barker was born on 26 June 1782. She died on 16 September 1879 in Mahomet, Champaigne, Illinois. [7] She married Andrew Robertson in 1802. [7] Andrew, the son of Andrew and Mary (Hall) Robertson, was born on 25 January 1781 in Pembroke, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He died on 25 January 1854 in Manchester, Merrimack County . [7]

Andrew was a farmer in New Hampshire. [7] Andrew and Mary had 14 children. [7]

ii. Sarah Barker was born on 6 March 1784. She died of dropsy on 26 December 1830 in Georgetown, Essex County. [4] She married [her first cousin] Captain Jeremiah Jewitt on 29 January 1807. [4] Jeremiah was the son of Jeremiah Jewett and [Sarah's aunt] Sarah Jackman. [8] He died on 15 November 1851, age 74. [2] He married second Eleanor, the daughter of Daniel Adams of Newbury. [8] She was born on 31 December 1792 and died on 24 May 1887 in Georgetown. [8]

Jeremiah and Sarah are buried in the Byfield Parish Cemetery in Byfield. [2]

Jeremiah was a manufacturer of boots and shoes. [8]

iii. Doctor John Barker was born on 12 August 1785. He married Phebe Abbott.

Phebe was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Farmington, Franklin County, Maine. She also has a centotaph in the Yantic Cemetery in New London that says, "Phebe Abbott wife of Dr. John Barker born Mar. 25, 1794, died Mar. 8, 1843 at Wilton, Maine." [2]

John studied medicine and settled in Wilton, Maine. He recevied an honorary M.D. degree from Brunswick Medical College in 1846. [5]

John was the father of Fordyce Barker, a distinguished New York physician. [5]

iv. Nancy Barker was born on 31 January 1788. She married Frederick Ingalls. [4]

v. Abigail Barker was born on 29 October 1790.

vi. Captain Samuel Barker was born on 6 July 1792. He died on 7 March 1869, probably in Bethel. [2] He married Hannah B. Clark. [5] Hannah, the wife of Captain Samuel, died on 19 March 1868. [2]

Samuel and Hannah are buried in the Skillingston Cemetery. [2]

vii. Timothy Barker was born on 1 July 1794. He died on 11 November 1875. [2] He married Eliza Town. [5] Elizabeth, the wife of Timothy, died on 23 January 1866. [2]

Timothy and Elizabeth are buried in the Skillingston Cemetery. [2]

viii. Pamelia Barker was born on 22 August 1796. She died on 3 December 1740. [2] She married James Grover. [5] James, the son of Eli and Mehitable (Austin) Grover and the grandson of Deacon James Grover, was born on 18 January 1792. [5] He married second Thirza Twitchell. [5] She died on 28 May 1859. [2] He married third Sarah Unknown. She died on 21 May 1898, age 82 years, ten months, and 21 days. [2] She married second William Richie Kimball. [2] He died on 20 March 1899, age 88 years and one month and is buried in the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts. [2]

James Grover and his first two wives are buried in the Skillingston Cemetery. [2]

ix. Hannah J. Barker was born on 26 July 1801. She died on 27 August 1874, probably in Bethel. She married James Walker.
