JAMES WALKER (1791–1866), son of John Walker and Elizabeth Calef

HANNAH JACKMAN BARKER (1801–1874), daughter of John Barker and Mary Jackman

James Walker was born in July 1791. He died on 7 December 1866, age 75 years and five months, probably in Bethel, Oxford County, Maine. [1][2] He married Hannah Barker. [3]

Hannah J. Barker, the daughter of John Barker, was born on 26 July 1801. [3] She died on 27 August 1874, probably in Bethel. [2]

James and his wife Hannah are buried in the Walker Mills (South Bethel) Cemetery in Bethel. [1][2]

James bought a mill property from John Abbott in South Bethel. The hamlet there was known as Walker's Mills. [3]

James rebuilt the mills, increasing their capacity, and established wool-carding and cloth-dressing mills. He kept a store and encouraged other industries to come to the area. Unfortunately, he lost heavily in the "land speculation" of 1837. [3]

James was a member of the Congregational Church at Bethel Hill. He served one term as the town representative to the legislature in 1848. [3]

James is probably the person in the 1830 census who lived in Bethel in a household with eight people: a male 30 to 39 [James], a female 20 to 29 [Hannah], a female five to nine [Lucretia], and a female under five [Nancy], as well as four unidentified people: a male and a female 20 to 29, and a male and a female ten to 14. In 1840 the census records that James headed a household in Bethel with one male 40 to 49 [James], One female 30 to 39 [Hannah], one male 20 to 29, one male 15 to 19, one female 15 to 19 [Lucretia], one female ten to 14 [Nancy] one male and one female five to nine [John B. and Hannah F.], and two females under five [Augusta and Emeline]. [4]

In 1850 James was a 58-year-old farmer living in Bethel with Hannah J., 48, Lucretia, 25, Nancy E., age 21, Hannah F., age 18, John B., age 16, Augusta, age 14, Emaline, age 11, Cullen F., age nine, and Alma I., age six. James and Hannah J. are said to have been born in New Hampshire; their apparent children were all born in Maine. James had real estate worth 8,000 dollars. Seven other people lived with them: four laborers, a stone cutter, a blacksmith, and one person with no occupation. James had a farm worth 1,000 dollars. It had 230 acres, 30 of which were improved. He had one horse, three milch cows, five other cattle, and one pig. He grew corn, oats, potatoes, and hay, and he made butter. [4]

In 1860, James and Hannah were living in Bethel. James was described as a mill man with real estate worth 5,000 dollars and a personal estate of 1,200 dollars. With them lived Nancy E, Hannah, John B. (a millman), Augusta, Emeline, Cullen F. (a farm laborer) and Alma I. James had a farm worth 2,000 dollars. He had 301 acres, 26 of which were improved. He had five horses, two milch cows, and one other cow. He grew rye, corn, peas, potatoes, buckwheat, and hay, and he made butter. [4]

James made his will on 1 November 1866. He left his daughters Hannah F. Walker, Augusta Walker, and Alma I. Walker 150 dollars each. He left his three other daughters, Lucretia W. Johnson, Nancey E. Burnham, and Emeline Grover, 25 dollars each. He left his son John B. Walker ten dollars and his son Cullen F. Walker one dollar. He left a good cow, his house, wagon, sleigh, and harness, some real estate in Coos County, New Hampshire, and the residue of his estate to his wife Hannah J. He made [his son-in-law] Pinckney Burnham his sole executor. Probate occurred on the third Tuesday [the 18th] of January 1887. His inventory amounted to 2,667.25 dollars. [5]

According to the census, in 1870 Cullen Walker was a 29-year-old farmer with real estate worth 3,000 and a personal estate of 405 dollars. He lived in Bethel with his wife Mary, age 31, and children Edith, age five, and James F., age one. With them lived Hannah J., age 69, Augusta F., a 34-year-old dressmaker, Hannah F., a 38-year-old milliner, and Alma I, a 26-year-old dressmaker. [4]

Hannah J. Walker of Bethel died intestate on 27 August 1874. Her estate amounted to 3,730.64 dollars and her children and only heirs were listed as: Hannah F. Walker, Augusta F. Walker, Emeline W. Grover, Nancy E. Burnham, Lucretia W. Johnson, Alma I. Walker, and John B. Walker. [5]

John B. Walker enlisted on 24 June 1861 as the first lieutenant of company I of the Fifth Maine Infantry. He was promoted to captain of the same company on 10 September 1862. Disabled with chronic diarrhea, Captain John B. Walker was mustered out on 18 January 1863. [11][12]

John's only child and heir, Emily C. Shedd, petitioned the government for a bounty for John's Civil War service. This was denied on 12 June 1897 on the grounds that bounties were only paid to enlisted men and John had never served as an enlisted man. [12]
