Stephen Smith was born about 1706 in Eastham. [1] He died of smallpox , age 59, in Chatham. [1] He is buried in a cemetery near the Harwich line known as the Chatham Smith or Chatham Smallpox cemetery. [1] The inscription on his gravestone says," Here Lies buried Mr Stephen Smith A Deacon Dec'd Jan'ry ye 13th 1766 in ye 60th year of his Age with Small pox." Stephen married first Hannah Collins. Hannah, the daughter of John and Hannah Doane, was born on 2 November 1711 in Eastham. [2] Stephen Smith of Chatham married second Bathsheba (Bathsua) Brown of Eastham on 9 April 1729 in Eastham. [1][3]

Bathsheba (Bathsua, Bershebe), was probably the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Mulford) Brown of Eastham. [1] She was probably born about 1710 in Eastham. [1] She died of smallpox on 16 January 1766, age 56, in Chatham. [1] She is buried in the Chatham Smallpox cemetery. The inscription on her gravestone says, "Here Lies buried Mrs Bershebe Smith Widow to Mr Stephen Smith who Dec'd in ye 57th year of her Age with the Small pox She Dec'd Jan'ry 16th 1766." [4]

Stephen and Hannah were admitted to full communion in the Chatham church on 18 December 1726. [1] Bathsheba was baptized there on 17 March 1741. [1]

Administration on Stephen's estate was granted to his son George on 11 March 1766. George was appointed guardian of James, a minor, and George's brother Elijah was appointed guardian of Phebe on 6 May 1766. [1]

i. Stephen Smith was baptized on 18 December 1726. He died on 9 September 1807 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. [5] He married Mehitable Eldridge. [1] She died on 4 September 1818 in Liverpool. [5]

Stephen and Mehitable went to Liverpool, Nova Scotia. [1]

Children of Stephen Smith and Bathsheba Brown:

ii. James Smith was baptized on 8 December 1729. He probably died young.

iii. George Smith was baptized on 16 December 1731. He married Barbara Mayo. [1]

iv. Archelaus Smith was baptized on 23 April 1734. He married Elizabeth Nickerson.

v. Elijah Smith was baptized on 24 February 1737. He married first Elizabeth Merrick. [1] He married second Mary (Taylor) Collins. [1]

Elijah lived in Barnstable. [1]

vi. Hannah Smith was baptized on 5 January 1739. She married Uriah Nickerson. [1][6] Uriah was the son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Mayo) Nickerson. [6]

Uriah and Hannah lived in New York state and in Litchfield, Connecticut. [1]

vii. Obadiah Smith was baptized on 14 January 1741/2. He married Susanna Taylor. [1]

viii. Bathsheba Smith was baptized on 5 January 1744. She died on smallpox on 18 January 1766, age 21, and is buried with her parents. She was engaged to Israel Nickerson, Jr. (intention 6 December 1765). The inscription on her gravestone says, "Mr Stephen Smith Bershebe his Dau'tr Dec'd Jan'ry 18th 1766 in her 22d year." [7]

ix. Phebe Smith was baptized on 8 January 1747. She married Thomas Kenwrick, Jr. [1]

x. James Smith was a minor on 6 May 1766. [1]

xi. Betty Smith was born about 1751. She died of smallpox on 7 February 1766, age 15, and is buried with her parents. The inscription on her gravestone says, "Bershebe Smith Betty her Dau'tr Died Jan'ry ye 7 1766 in her 16th year." [8]
