JOHN SMITH (1673–1716/1718), son of Samuel Smith and Mary Hopkins

BETHIAH SNOW (1672–1734), daughter of Stephen Snow and Susanna Deane


John, the son of Samuel and Mary (Hopkins) Smith, was born on 26 May 1673 in Eastham. [1][2][3][4] He died between 13 March 1716 and 25 February 1717/8. He married Bethiah Snow on 14 May 1694 in Eastham. [2][4][5, 8:243]

Bethiah, the daughter of Stephan and Susanna (Deane) Snow, was born on 1 July 1672 in Eastham. [1][42] She died a widow in 1734. [1]

Note: Monomoit was incorporated as Chatham on 11 June 1712.

John Smith is referred to as Stephen Snow's son-in-law in Stephen's estate papers.

John lived in Eastham until after the birth of his second child. His father willed him half of two farms at Tom's Neck, Monomoit (Chatham), and he moved there. [4]

He was a large owner in the Great Beach. [4]

By a deed of 3 June 1697 he bought 20 acres in Harwich from William Cahoon (the husband of Elizabeth Nickerson) in exchange for land at Monomoit. [3] On 8 July 1702 Mary (Woodman) Small (or Smalley) bought land at Tom's Neck from John. [3] On 28 April 1713 John was listed as one of those eligible to be granted land. Lots were drawn on 1 March 1714 and John received the seventh choice. [3]

In 1701 and 1707 he was a surveyor and fence viewer. [3] In June 1704 he was chosen to go to the Court and answer for the town in proceedings brought against it for not having a pound. [3] He was chosen a selectman in March 1712. [3] He was chosen constable in March 1713. [3] He signed a petition in favor of the minister, Reverend Hugh Adams, on 13 March 1716. [3]

Administration on John's estate was granted to his son Samuel on 25 February 1717/8. William Nickerson of Chatham was appointed guardian of his daughter Bethiah; Samuel was appointed guardian of his son Seth; [his son] Deane was appointed guardian of his son David; Richard Knowles of Chatham was appointed guardian of his son John; Samuel Steward of Chatham was appointed guardian of his daughter Mary; Thomas Atkins of Chatham was appointed guardian of his son Stephen. Children of John Smith and Bethiah Snow: The last eight probably born in Chatham.

i. James Smith was born on 13 February 1694/5 in Eastham and he died there on 27 May 1696. [2][5, 8:243]

ii. Samuel Smith was born on 25 May 1696 in Eastham. [2][5, 8:243] He married Mercy (or Mary), the daughter of Isaac Higgens of Eastham on 19 July 1778. [1][2]

Samuel lived in Chatham. [4] We was a selectman in 1736 and 1743 and a church member. [4]

Samuel did not marry second Sarah Snow, as has been claimed. [4]

iii. Deane Smith was born about 1698. [2] He married Esther, the daughter of John Rider of Yarmouth on 17 October 1720. [2][4]

In her will of 24 May 1701, Miriam Wing, left her estate to her kinsman Dean Smith, the son of her kinswoman Bethiah Smith of Monomoit. [6] The estate of Miriam Wing, widow of John Wing and late of Harwich, was granted to her kinsman Dean Smith, son of John Smith of Manamoit on 14 Jan 1702/3. [6]

iv. Mercy Smith was born about 1698/1702. [2][4] She married Nathan Kenney of Chatham on 24 September 1729 in Chatham.[2][7]

v. Mary Smith was born about 1702. She married Obadiah, the son of Isaac Chase of Yarmouth, about 1732. [4]

On 11 July 1722 Mary, age about 20, chose Samuel Steward, yeoman of Chatham, to be her guardian. [6]

vi. John Smith was born on 7 April 1703. [2] He married first Elizabeth, the daughter of George and Martha (Cooke) Brown, on 21 September 1727. [2] He married second Lydia, the widow of Ebenezer Snow, on 7 April 1763. [2]

vii. Stephen Smith was born about 1706. He died on 13 January 1766 in Chatham. He married Bathsheba Brown.

viii. Bethiah Smith was born about 1708. She married Elisha, the son of Elisha and Elizabeth (Merrick) Young, on 15 December 1731 in Chatham. [2][7]

On 11 July 1722, William Nickerson of Chatham was appointed the guardian of Bethiah Smith, the 14-year-old daughter of the late John Smith of Chatham. [6]

ix. David Smith was born about 1711. [2] He was living in 1734. [4]

x. Seth Smith was born about 1713. [2] He married first Elizabeth Unknown on 15 March 1737. [2] She died on 12 April 1756. [2] He married second Mary (Godfrey) Nickerson on 18 November 1756. [1][2] Mary was widow of Caleb Nickerson. [2]
