ARCHELAUS SMITH (bp. 1734 – 1821), son of Stephen Smith and Bathsheba Brown

ELIZABETH NICKERSON (1735–1828), daughter of William Nickerson and Sarah Covell


Archelaus Smith, the son of Stephen Smith and Bathsheba Brown, was baptized on 23 April 1734 in Chatham. [1] Archelaus Smith and Elizabeth Nickerson, both of Chatham, were married on 16 July 1752 in Chatham. [2] Archelaus Smith, Esq., died on 3 April 1821. [3]

Elizabeth Nickerson, the daughter of William and Sarah (Covell) Nickerson, was born on 15 May 1735 in Chatham. [3] She died on 2 April 1828. [3]

Elizabeth is said to have left, exclusive of a daughter in the United States, five children, 56 grandchildren, 297 great-grandchildren, 64 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild. [3]

Archelaus was one of several men from Chatham who were impressed into military service from 10 July to 24 December 1759. [4]

Archelaus was on the proprietors' committee on 8 Dec 1766 in Barrington. He was a magistrate in 1772. He was a proprietor's clerk in 1778. [6]

i. Susanna Smith died in 1838 in Barrington. She married Joseph Atwood.

ii. Hezekiah Smith married Abigail, the daughter of Edmund Doane. [5]

iii. Mercy Smith married John Cunningham. [5]

iv. James Smith was born on 6 October 1762 in Barrington. [7] He married first Sarah, the daughter of Henry Wilson. [5] She died in 1800. [5] He married second Tabitha (Kendrick) Nickerson, the widow of Joshua Nickerson. [5]

v. Stephen Smith was born on 15 December 1764 in Barrington. [7] He married first Sarah Hinckly. [5] He married second Mary, the daughter of Walter Larkin. [5]

vi. Archelaus Smith was born on 19 August 1766 in Barrington. [7] He married Patience Hamilton. [5][8]

vii. Hannah Smith was born on 1 March 1768 in Barrington. [7] She married first Daniel Vincent. [5] She married second Unknown Coffin. [5]

viii. Eunice Smith married Henry Newell. [5]
