ENSIGN WILLIAM NICKERSON (c. 1675–1742), son of William Nickerson and Mercy Williams

DELIVERANCE LOMBARD (d. c. 1716), daughter of Caleb Lombard


Ensign William, the son of William and Mercy (Williams) Nickerson, was born about 1675. [1] William died between 19 October and 15 November 1742. He married first Deliverance, the daughter of Caleb and Deliverance Lombard. [2][3] He married second Anna Atwood, the daughter of Eldad Atwood and Anna Snow and granddaughter of Mark Snow and Anna Cook, on 24 October 1717. [2][4] Anna married second as his second wife Benjamin Bearse, Sr. of Barnstable on 25 August 1747 in Chatham. [1][3] Benjamin married first Sarah Cobb and they were the grandparents of the Sarah who married William's grandson Gideon Nickerson. [3]

Deliverance was the daughter of Caleb Lombard. [2, "probably"][3] She died about 1716. [1][3]

William was styled ensign.[1][3] He was a selectman for two years. [1][3] He was a tanner. [1][3]

By a deed of 25 March 1696, William bought land at Cotchpinicut in North Chatham, where he probably lived. [1] By a deed of 13 October 1702, his father conveyed land at Monomesset Neck to him. [1] In about 1740 He bought real estate from the heirs of his brother Nathaniel. [2]

William Nickerson of Chatham was appointed the guardian of Bethiah Smith on 11 July 1722.

William wrote a codicil to his will on 19 October 1742. His estate was probated on 15 November 1742. His will names his sons with Deliverance (William, Caleb, James, Joshua, Nathaniel), their deceased daughter Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Atkins, their daughter Mercy the wife of Seth Paddock. It also names his children with Anna: Eldad, Deborah the wife of William Padishall, and Anna, the wife of Jonathan Crowell. [3]

Children of William Nickerson and Deliverance Lombard: Order uncertain

i. William Nickerson was born on 16 May 1701. He married Sarah Covell.

ii. Deliverance Nickerson married Abraham Chase of Harwich. [1]

Abraham and Deliverance moved to Tisbury before 1749. [1]

iii. Mercy Nickerson died before her father. She married Seth Paddock, on 13 April 1727. [2] Seth was the son of Sergeant Robert and Martha (Hall) Paddock of Chatham and Mansfield, Connecticut and the grandson of Zachariah and Deborah (Sears) Paddock of Yarmouth and John and Priscilla (Bearse) Hall. [1] He was born on 13 March 1704/5. [1] He married second Zerviah Storrs, the daughter of Captain Thomas Storrs of Mansfield, on 10 October 1735. [1] She died on 3 January 1737/8. [1] He married third Ruth, the daughter of Lieutenant Robert Arnold of Mansfield, on 17 February 1744/5. [1]

iv. Elizabeth Nickerson died before her father. She married Thomas, the son of Thomas Atkins, about 1726. [2]

v. Caleb Nickerson died on 18 December 1749. [3] He married Mary, the daughter of Moses Godfrey, about 1732. [2] Mary was the daughter of Moses Godfrey and Deborah Cook. [3][5] She was born on 4 September 1711. [3] She married second Seth Smith on 18 November 1756. [2]

In 1743 Caleb sold his share of his father's estate to his brother William and moved to North Chatham (Old Harbor). [3]

vi. James Nickerson married Dorcas Covell, probably the daughter of Joseph Covell. [1]

James and Dorcas moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut about 1747. [1]

vii. Joshua Nickerson was of age in 1734 and he was living in 1739. [1]

viii. Nathaniel Nickerson was underage in 1734. [1] He married Thankful Nickerson, probably the daughter of Thomas Nickerson, about 1738. [1]

Children of William Nickerson and Anna Atwood:

ix. Anna Nickerson married Jonathan Crowell on 13 July 1738. [1] Jonathan was the son of Isaac and Ruth Crowell of Yarmouth. [1][6] He married second Elizabeth Parker. [3]

Jonathan and Elizabeth moved to Barrington, Nova Scotia about 1762. [1][3]

x. Deborah Nickerson married William Padishall between September 1739 and October 1742. [1]

xi. Eldad Nickerson was born about 1723. [1] He married Mary, the daughter of James Cahoon of Eastham, on 31 October 1744. [1]

Eldad and Mary moved to Barrington, Nova Scotia about 1762. [1]
