JOSEPH COVELL (c. 1675–aft. 1732), son of Nathaniel Covell and Sarah Nickerson
HANNAH BASSETT (b. say 1680), daughter of Nathaniel Bassett and Dorcas Joyce
Joseph, the son of Nathaniel and Sarah (Nickerson) Covell, was born about 1675 in Monomoit. [1] He was living in 1732. [1] He married first Lydia, the daughter of Hugh and Waite Stewart, about 1700. [2][3] He married second Hannah Bassett on 1 March 1703/4. [4, 3:181] Hannah was the daughter of Nathaniel Bassett. [2]
Hannah Bassett was born say 1680.
Hannah is called Hannah Covell in the 10 January 1709/10 will of her father.
Secondary sources such as Smith assert that Lydia is the only child of Joseph Covell's first wife Lydia. However, Sarah (or one of the other of Joseph's children) could have been born in the summer of 1703 and it appears possible she (or one of the other children) could have been a child of Lydia.
Children of Joseph Covell and Lydia Stuart:
i. Lydia Covell was born on 12 July 1701. [3] She married Thomas Nickerson on 16 May 1716[!]. [3] He is probably the son of Thomas Nickerson.
Children of Joseph Covell and Hannah Bassett: Order uncertain
ii. Sarah Covell married William Nickerson.
iii. James Covell married Mary Chase. [5]
iv. Constant Covell (maybe) married Ebenezer Nickerson. [5] Ebenezer might be the brother of the husband of Constant's half-sister Lydia.
v. Dorcas Covell married James Nickerson. [5]
vi. Joseph Covell married his first cousin Hannah Bassett, the daughter of Nathan Basset. [6] He died shortly afterward and she married second Asa Mayo on 23 July 1756 in Eastham. [6] Asa, the son of Theophilus and Rebecca (Smith) Mayo, was born on 29 July 1706 in Eastham. [7] He married first Experience Yates. [7] Experience, the daughter of John and Abigail (Rogers) Yates and granddaughter of James Rogers, was probably born in 1710/3 in Harwich. [7] She died on 3 July 1750 in Eastham. [7]
