John Howard (c. 1683–1744), son of William Howard and possibly Tabitha Kinsman

Mary Martin (1692–1736), daughter of George Martin

John Howard was probably born about 1683. He died on 2 December 1744, age 60 in Windham, Windham County, Connecticut. [1] He married Mary Martin after 22 February 1712 (intention) in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. [2]

Mary, the daughter of George, was born on 7 August 1692 at Chebacco (formerly of Ipswich and now called Essex), Essex County. [2]

Mary, the wife of John, died on 10 November 1736 in Windham. [1]

John and Mary are buried in the South Cemetery in Hampton (then in Windham). [3]

Mary is referred to as Mary Martin alias Howard, the wife of John Howard, in the settlement of her father's estate.

Mary was admitted to the church in Hampton, on recommendation from the church in Ipswich, on 20 October 1734. [4]

Children of John Howard and Mary Martin:

i. Captain John Howard was born on 15 February 1716, probably in Ipswich (but recorded in Windham). He died on 16 June 1789 in Hampton. He married Sarah Bennett.

ii. Tabitha Howard was born on 15 August 1723, probably in Ipswich (but recorded in Windham). [1] She died on 18 March 1808, age 84, and is buried in the South Cemetery. [3] She married James Keyes of Windham on 5 November 1745 in Hampton. [4] He died on 20 June 1803 and is buried in the South Cemetery. [3]

James Keyes of Windham and his wife Tabitha acknowledged that they had received their portion of Tabitha's father John Howard's estate, left to her in his will of 29 October 1744, on 9 June 1746. [5]

iii. Daniel Howard was baptized on 3 December 1727 in Ipswich. [2]

iv. Joseph Howard was born on 2 February 1728 in Ipswich. [2]

iii. Elizabeth Howard was born on 6 September 1729, probably in Ipswich (but recorded in Windham). [1] She was baptized on 13 September 1730 in Ipswich. [2] She is probably the Elizabeth who married Francis Bennett of Windham on 9 June 1756 in Hampton. [4]

Elizabeth Howard acknowledged she had received her portion of her father John Howard's estate on 23 December 175[?]. [5]

iv. William Howard was baptized on 9 January 1731/2 in Ipswich. He died on 28 October 1736 in Windham and was buried in the South Cemetery.

An Ipswich record says William, s. John and Mary, bp. Jan. 9, 1731/2. C. R. 4. [2]

A Windham records says, "William, s. John & Mary, b. Oct. 28, 1736, at Ipswich; d. same day." However, he must have been born and died in Windham. [1]

A gravestone in the South Cemetery says, "Here lies the body of William Howard the son of John Howard who died October 28 1736 in the 5 year of his age." [3]

From this, and Mary's age in 1736, I conclude that it is likely that there was one child William who was baptized on 9 January 1731/2 in Ipswich (where Mary was apparently then a member of the church). This child died on 28 October 1736 in what is now Hampton in Windham (were John and Mary had moved) and was buried there.

iv. Nathan Howard was born on 15 October 1733 in Ipswich (but recorded in Windham). [1] He was baptized on 21 October 1733 in Ipswich. [2]

Nathan Howard acknowledged receipt from his brother John, the executor of their father Mr. John Howard's estate, his portion of the estate on 16 April 1755 in Windham. [5]
