Captain John Howard (1716–1789), son of John Howard and Mary Martin

Sarah Bennett (c. 1723–1812), daughter of William Bennett and Sarah Giddings

John, the son of John and Mary Howard, was born on 15 February 1716 in Windham, Windham County, Connecticut. [1] Captain John Howard died on 16 June 1789 in Hampton, Windham County. [1] He married Sarah Bennett on 8 January 1740/1 in the Hampton Congregational Church in Hampton. [1][2]

Sarah's birth or baptism does not appear to have been recorded. She was probably born about 1723. Her father calls her Sarah Howard in his will of 9 March 1762.

John and Sarah are buried in the South Cemetery in Hampton. John's inscription says, "Sacred to the Memory of Capt. John Howard He died the 16 of June AD 1789 age 74." Sarah's gravestone is broken, but it appears to say that she died in 1812, age 89. [3]

John and Sarah were admitted to the church and admitted to communion on 5 September 1742 in Hampton. [2]

John Howard of Windham made his will on 21 January 1785 (the day after his son Daniel died). He left detailed instructions for the provisioning of his wife. She was to have a third of his indoor movables and as long as she remained a widow, one third of his house and cellar. In addition she was to have two good cows and a horse to ride. Every year she was to have ten bushels of Indian corn, four of rye, three of wheat and one of barley malt, three barrels of cider; 120 pounds of good pork, 50 pounds of good beef, half a bushel of beans, two gallons of rum, three gallons of molasses, 14 pounds of sugar, two pairs of good shoes, ten pounds of good sheep wool, 15 pounds of good flax, as well as turnips, carrots, beets, parsnips, onions and nursing and doctoring if she became ill. If she were to remarry, she would instead get ten pounds per year. But, if she were widowed again, she would revert to what she was previously entitled. John left the rest of his estate to his sons James, William, and Nathan; the children of his deceased son John; his daughter Sarah Fish; his grandson Rufus Johnson, the son of his daughter Mary Johnson; his daughter Eleanor Perkins; the children of his daughter Chloe Griffith. His witnesses testified on 1 August 1789; probate was on 16 December 1789. An undated inventory amounts to £725-10-09. [4]

Hampton was incorporated in 1786 from land that included land in Windham. Thus, the town of Windham recorded the births of John and Sarah's children, while the church in Hampton recorded their baptisms.

Children of Captain John Howard and Sarah Bennett: Births recorded in Windham, the first two as the children of John, Jr. and Sarah and the others as the children of John and Sarah. [1] Baptisms were recorded in Hampton as the children of John and Sarah. [2]
