William Howard (Hayward) (c. 1634–1709)

Tabitha (b. c. 1641), possibly the daughter of Robert Kinsman

William Howard (Hayward) was born about 1634, based on his age at death. He died in Ipswich on 25 July 1709, age 75, according to his gravestone. [1] Given the birth date of his first child, he probably married in 1666.

William is buried in the Old North Burial Ground in Ipswich. [1] His gravestone says, “Here Lyes ye Body of William Houeard who died July ye 25th, 1709 in ye 74 year of his age.”  [2]

William's origins are unknown. [1]

Tabitha was probably born about 1641. David L. Greene argues that William's wife Tabitha might have been Tabitha Kinsman, the daughter of Robert. They had familial connections and it is consistent with quirks in land transfers. However, there is no proof.

Tabitha Kinsman's father left Tabitha his house and the land around it in his 1665 will. By February 1670/[1?] her brother owned the property, but no transfer was recorded. David L. Greene argues that one possibility is that Tabitha died and left her estate to her brother and sisters, and her sisters transfered their shares to their brother and none of these transfers were recorded. Another possibility is that Tabitha married and she and her husband transfered her share to her brother in an unrecorded deed. He points out that the latter possibility relies on fewer transfers being unrecorded. [1]

Tabitha Haward deposed that she was about 32 in 1673. (This corrects a transcription error that said 52.) [1]

William Howard was in Ipswich in 1665, when he was a journeyman of Samuel Graves of Ipswich, maker of felt or hats. He spent the rest of his life following that trade there. [1]

William was granted “liberty to fall trees” in Ipswich in 1670.   [2]

Thomas Emerson bought the land William's house later stood on in 1638. It was bounded by the planting lot of Robert Cross, the house lot of John Dane , the lot of William Wildes and the river. Thomas Emerson built a house and sold the house and six acres, to Daniel Ringe on 14 (12) 1648. [1][2] Uzal Wardwell and his wife Grace sold it to William on 7 April 1679. Architectural evidence suggests that the house in the photo was built, first as a half house, on the land in 1680. The second half was build in 1709. [2]

In his will of 23 July 1709, William left his son William his dwelling house that he bought from Uzall Wardell. He left his sons John and Samuel the new end of the house, which was not fully finished, with one half of the stack of chimneys in this new end. He left his son Samuel his old mansion house, with one half of the stack of chimneys in the new end, and the weaving shop that Samuel was using. [1] John sold his share of the house and land, three acres only, to his brother Samuel on 20 March 1714. [2]

The Daniel Ringe who bought the property from Thomas Emerson married Mary, the daughter of Robert Kinsman. She married second Uzal Wardwell on 3 May 1664. On 2 May 1669 Daniel's daughter Susanna sold her share of her father's estate to Uzal. Uzal married second Grace Unknown and they sold the house to William. [1]

William wrote his will on 23 July 1709; it was proved on 1 August 1709. He mentions his wife, but not by name. He mentions his sons William, John, and Samuel and his daughters Mary Fuller, Tabitha Hodgkins, Mercy Hovey, and Martha Howard. He asks his sons John and Samuel to maintain his sister Hannah Howard. [1] His sons reached agreement on the division of his land on 1 August 1709. [1]

The births of William's children—other John—were recorded in Ipswich. Mary, William, Marcy and Martha are recorded as the children of William Hayward. Samuel is recorded as the son of William and Tabitha Hayword. Tabitha is recorded as the daughter of William Howerd. [3]

Children of William Howard:

i. Mary Howard was born in December 1667. She probably died by 4 September 1725, if the date for her husband's intention of a second marriage is not an error. She married Joseph Fuller. [1] Joseph was the son of John and Elizabeth (Emerson) Fuller and the grandson of Thomas Emerson. [4] He was born in 1658, based on his age at death. Sargent Joseph Fuller died on 22 August 1731, age 73, in Ipswich. [3] He married second Elizabeth Hitchins on 29 April 1729 in Ipswich. [3]

There is also an Ipswich record for an intention of marriage between Sergeant Joseph and Elizabeth Hutchins dated 4 September 1725. [3]

Joseph was a carpenter. [4][5] He was a soldier in Captain Turner's company in the Falls Fight on 19 May 1676 in King Philip's War. [4]

In March 1692/3 Joseph was granted land in Ipswich, which he sold to his brother Nathaniel. [4][5]

In 1692 Joseph, as constable for Ipswich, arrested the suspected witch Rachel Clinton. [5]

On 1 November 1731 Joseph's son William was granted administration on his father's estate. [4] Joseph owned a substantial amount of land and died intestate. [6] Most of his estate was divided for his children, but a 13 June 1732 estate paper mentioned a dower payment to his widow. [6]

ii. Tabitha Howard born on 21 January 1669. Tabitha, the widow of Christopher, died on 15 September 1735 in Ipswich. [3] She married Christopher Hodgkins on 29 January 1689/[90?] in Ipswich. [1] Christopher "drowned in coming over Squam," presumably the Annisquam River in Gloucester, on 4 March 1724. [3]

iii. William Howard was born on 25 June 1673. He married Martha Hodgkins on 7 January 1695/[6?] in Ipswich. [1] Martha, the wife of William, died on 9 October 1732 in Ipswich. [3] William is probably the William Hoard (Howard in the intention) who married [second] the widow Elizabeth Paine of Gloucester on 27 October 1733 in Gloucester. [3]

iv. Marcy Howard was born on 8 October 1675. She married Daniel Hovey. [1] Daniel might be the son of Daniel, born on 24 June 1665 in Ipswich. [3]

v. Martha Howard was born on 31 March 1678. She probably died on 23 June 1748, unmarried, in Ipswich. [1]

i. John Howard was born about 1683. He died on 2 December 1744. He married Mary Martin.

vii. Samuel Howard was born on 3 October 1685. He married Esther Cross after 28 February 1712 (intention) in Ipswich. [1]
