Stephen Hall (c. 1638–1724), son of Unknown Hall and Mary Unknown

Ruth Davis (bp. 1644–1715), daughter of Dolor Davis and Margery Willard


Stephen was the son of the widow Mary Hall. [1] He was born about 1638, based on his age at death, in England. He died on 1 October 1724, age 86 in Plainfield. [2] He married Ruth Davis on 3 December 1663 in Concord. [3, 12]

Ruth, the daughter of Dolor Davis, was baptized on 24 March 1644 in Barnstable. [4] She died on 6 June 1715 in Plainfield. [2]

Ruth's father refers to Ruth as his daughter Ruth Hall in his will of 13 September 1672.

Stephen sold 110 acres in Concord in 1684 and moved to the new settlement of Stow, adjoining Concord. [5] He was a selectman there in 1681 and 1683. [5] He was a representative from Stow in 1689. [5]

Stephan and his family moved to Plainfield in the 1690s. [5]

On 31 May 1699 the inhabitants of Quinebaug Plantation met to organize a town government. Jacob Warren, Joseph Spalding and Stephen Hall were among those chosen selectman. [6]

On 24 December 1702 Stephen signed an agreement for two religious societies in Plainfield. Major James Fitch and Richard Adams were two of the east side signers; Stephen, Joseph and Benjamin Spalding, Jacob Warren and Joshua Whitney were some of the west side signers. [6]

In 1702/3 land in Plainfield was divided into five sections called eighths and allocated. Benjamin Palmer, Joshua Whitney, Nathaniel Jewell, Stephen Hall, Thomas Williams, Benjamin Spalding, Sr., Timothy Pierce and Joseph Spalding were given land in the third eighth. [6]

Children of Stephen Hall and Ruth Davis:

i. Samuel Hall was born on 8 December 1665 in Concord. [3, 12] He married Hannah Sawtell. [7]

Samuel lived in Stow. [7]

ii. Stephen Hall was born on 1 June 1667 in Concord. [5] He died on 7 November 1749, age 82. [8] He married first Grace Willis. [7] Grace, the daughter of Thomas and Grace Willis, died on 19 November 1721. [8] He married second Martha Hill. [7] He married third Anna Newell. [7] Anne was the widow of Joseph Newell. [8]

Stephen lived in Medford and Charlestown. [7]

iii. Ruth Hall was born on 12 January 1670 in Concord. [3, 15] She died on 5 September 1735 in Stowe. [9]

iv. Susanna Hall married John Smith on 25 June 169_ in Plainfield. [2]

vi. John Hall lived in Plainfield. [7] He married Mary ___. She died on 17 October 1710, age 18, in Plainfield. [2]

vi. Mary Hall was born on 1 June 1677 in Concord. [3, 20] She died on 30 May 1719 in Plainfield. [2] She married Thomas Stevens, Jr. on 26 May 1702 in Plainfield. [2] He might be the Thomas Jr. who died on 12 November 1755 in Plainfield. [2] He might be the Thomas 2nd who married Abigail Wineward on 14 March 1719/20 in Plainfield. [2]

vii. Elizabeth Hall was born on 7 April 1685 in Stow. [9] She died after 1765. She married Edward Spalding on 21 October 1708 in Plainfield. [2] Edward was the son of Edward and Mary (Bracket) Spalding and the grandson of John Spalding and is wife Hannah Heald. [10] He was born on 3 February 1684 in Plainfield and died about 1770 in Plainfield. [10]

vii. Sarah Hall was born on 19 June 1688 in Stow. She married first Benjamin Spalding. She married second William Blodgett.
