Edward Spalding (bp. 1601–1669)

Edward was baptized on 10 May 1601 in Alburgh, Norfolk. He died on 26 February 1669/70 in Chelmsford. [1][2] He married first Margaret Elliott in 1623 in Redenhall, Norfolk. [2] Margaret was the daughter of John Elliott and the granddaughter of John Elliott of Harleston, Norfolk. [2] She died in 1640 in Braintree, Massachusetts. [3] Edward married second Rachel Unknown about 1642. [2]

Rachel died between 13 February 1666 and 5 April 1670.

Edward Spalding's English Ancestry [2]

John Mowling married Sibyl (Cullum) Bootye on 2 September 1567 in Heveningham, Suffolk. She married first Roger Booty in 1563 in Palgrave. He was buried on 10 February 1566/7.

Diana Spalding, the daughter of John and Sibyl (Cullum) (Bootye) Mowling, was baptized on 9 April 1570 in Palgrave. She died in March 1638/9. She married Edward Spalding on 21 September 1598 at St. Mary's in Redenhall, Norfolk. Edward was buried on 30 May 1626 in Redenhall.

Edward, the son of Edward and Diana (Mowling) Spalding, was baptized on 10 May 1601 in Alburgh, Norfolk.

Edward settled in Braintree in 1639. In 1640 he and his wife Margaret lived there with their children Grace, born in 1624, John, born in 1633, and Edward, born about 1635. He was a freeman on 16 May 1640. [2]

By 9 June 1647 Edward had joined a small congregation in Wenham, Essex County. [2]

Edward of Chelmsford wrote his will on 13 February 1666; his witnesses took oath on 5 April 1670. He left his estate to Rachel for life and named her his sole executor. He also left bequests to his sons Andrew, Edward and John, and his daughter Dinah. He did not mention Benjamin and Joseph; perhaps they had their portion before they went to Connecticut. On 5 April 1670 Edward and John were named executors of the estates of their father and mother, as both were deceased. [4]

Edward's children John, Edward, Benjamin, Joseph, Dinah and Andrew were baptized on 1 February 1656/7 in Chelmsford. [1]

Edward's sons Joseph and Benjamin went to Plainfield. [5]

i. Grace Spalding was baptized on 13 June 1624. She was buried in May 1641 in Braintree. [3]

ii. John Spalding was baptized on 1 May 1629. He presumably died young.

iii. Samuel Spalding was baptized on 5 May 1630. He presumably died young.

iv. John Spalding was baptized on 13 April 1633. He died on 3 October 1721 in Chelmsford. [1] He married first Hannah Heald (recorded as "Halle") on 18 May 1658 in Chelmsford. [1] Hannah, the daughter of John Heald of Concord and an evidently unknown first wife, died on 14 August 1689 in Chelmsford. [2] John married second Mary (Stow) (Cotton) Fletcher on 18 November 1700. Mary, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Griggs) Stow, was born on 6 February 1642/3 and probably died between 4 April 1706 and 7 July 1707. She married first John Cotton. She married second Samuel Fletcher. [2]

John was about 23 on 1 February 1656/7. [1]

v. Edward Spalding was baptized on 2 August 1634. He died on 10 January 1707/8 in Chelmsford. [2] He married first Priscilla Underwood on 6 July 1663 in Chelmsford. [2][1] Edward married second Margaret Barrett on 22 November 1681 in Chelmsford. [1] Margaret, the daughter of Thomas and Frances (Woolderson) Barrett, was born on 31 March 1660 in Chelmsford and died there on 25 May 1748. [2]

Edward was about 21 on 1 February 1656/7. [1]

vi. Esther Spalding was baptized on 25 January 1637/8. She was buried on 16 July 1638. [2]

Children of Edward and Rachel Spalding:

vii. Benjamin Spalding was born on 7 April 1643 in Braintree. He died on 5 October 1713 in Plainfield. He married first Olive Farwell. He married second Grace Unknown.

viii. Joseph Spalding was born on 25 October 1646, possibly in Wenham. [2] He died on 3 April 1740 in Plainfield. [2] He married Mercy Jewell on 9 December 1670 in Chelmsford. [1] Mercy, the daughter of Thomas and Grizell (Fletcher) Jewell, was born on 14 April 1653 in Braintree. [2] She died on 17 August 1728 in Plainfield. [2]

On 31 May 1699 the inhabitants of Quinebaug Plantation (later Plainfield) met to organize a town government. Jacob Warren, Joseph Spalding and Stephen Hall were among those chosen selectman. [5]

On 13 November 1699 Major James Fitch, Joseph Spalding , Richard Adams, Joshua Whitney, Benjamin Spalding and James Kingsbury signed a petition to incorporate Plainfield and hire a minister. [5]

In 1701 Joseph was on a committee to consider land use and allotment in Plainfield. [5]

On 24 December 1702 Joseph signed an agreement for two religious societies in Plainfield. Major James Fitch and Richard Adams were two of the east side signers; Joseph and Benjamin Spalding, Jacob Warren, Stephen Hall and Joshua Whitney were some of the west side signers. [5]

In April 1704 Joseph and Jacob Warren were appointed to a committee to complete the schoolhouse in Plainfield. [5]

In 1702/3 land in Plainfield was divided into five sections called eighths and allocated. Benjamin Palmer, Joshua Whitney, Nathaniel Jewell, Stephen Hall, Thomas Williams, Benjamin Spalding, Sr., Timothy Pierce and Joseph Spalding were given land in the third eighth. [5]

In December 1707 Joseph was on a committee to establish a school in Plainfield. [5]

ix. Dinah Spalding was born on 14 March 1649/50 in Wenham. [2] She died on 11 March 1706/7 in Canterbury. [2] She married Deacon Eleazar Browne on 9 February 1674 in Chelmsford. [MVR] Eleazar died on 22 January 1718/20 in Canterbury. [2] He married second Rebecca (Adams) Waldo in 1710. [2]

x. Deacon Andrew Spalding was born on 19 November 1653 in Wenham. [2] He died on 5 May 1713 in Chelmsford. [1] He married Hannah Jefts on 30 April 1674 in Chelmsford. [1] Hannah, the daughter of Henry and Hannah Jefts (Jeiffs, Jeftes) was born on 4 or 14 February 1654/5 in Billerica. [6]
