Doctor William Blodgett (1686–1739), son of Samuel Blodgett and Huldah Symonds

Sarah Hall (1688–1736), daughter of Stephen Hall and Ruth Davis

William, the son of Samuel and Huldah Blodgett, was born on 11 January 1686 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1] He is probably the Doctor William Blodgett who died on 17 December 1739 and is buried in the Brown Cemetery in Preston, New London County. [2] He married first Sarah Spalding, the widow of Benjamin, Jr. on 18 August 1714 in Plainfield, Windham County Connecticut. [3] He married second Mehitable Sterry on 31 March 1737 in Plainfield. [3] Mary was the widow of Samuel Sterry of Preston.

Sarah, the daughter of Stephen Hall and Ruth Davis, was born on 19 June 1688 in Stow, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [4][5] Sarah, the wife of Doctor William Blodgett, died on 14 January 1735/6 in Plainfield. [3] She (referred to in the town record as the daughter of Stephen) married first Benjamin Spalding on 21 October 170[8?] in Plainfield. [3][5]

William Blodgett of Preston, administrator of the estate of Doctor William Blodgett of Preston, told the May 1741 General Assembly that the deceased died with debts of about 255 pounds more than his personal estate could pay. He requested that someone be appointed to make a sale of enough of the deceased's real estate as necessary to satisfy this debt. [6]

William's second marriage record says [3]

William, m. Mehetable Steevens*. Mar. 31, 1737 (•note at bottom of page of original manuscript states: "Wm. Blodgetf s widow is referred to as widow of Samuel Sterry in probate files of Blodgett estate")

Samuel Sterry referred to his wife Mehitable in his will of 3 March 1734 and named her his executrix. His widow is referred to as Mehitable Sterry in a 2 February 1736/7 account record and as Mehitable Blodgett in an 11 February 1737/8 account record. [7]

Children of William Blodgett and Sarah Hall: Births recorded in Plainfield. [3]

i. William Blodgett was born on 20 May 1715. William of Preston married Mary Starkweather of Preston on 28 June 1738 in Griswold, New London County. [8] Mary is probably the daughter of Timothy and Mehitable Starkweather born 6 March 1714/5 in Preston. [3] This Mary may be William's stepsister; see Samuel Sterry's entry.

William was admitted to the church in Griswold on 30 July 1742. [8]

ii. Benjamin Blodgett was born on 17 May 1717.

Benjamin was admitted to the church in Griswold on 18 April 1742 in Griswold. [8]

iii. Mary Blodgett was born on 13 June 1721. She married Ebenezer Freeman of Preston on 27 June 1738 in Preston or Griswold. [3][8] Ebenezer, the son of John and Abigail (Whitter) Freeman, was born on 28 November 1714 in Preston. [3]

iv. Amy Blodgett was born on 16 February 1724. She died on 24 December 1819 in Canaan, Litchfield County Connecticut. She married first Joshua Whitney. She married second Captain Isaac Lawrence. She married third George Palmer.

v. Tace Blodgett was born on 9 June 1727.

According to the Preston town records, Nathan Freeman of Preston married Lucy Blodgett of Preston on 5 December 1748. [3] It is possible that Lucy is an unrecorded daughter of William. Perhaps more likely, "Tace" is a bad transcription of, say, "Luce." This Nathan is the son of Joseph and Hannah (Brewster) Freeman, born 22 September 1721 in Preston. [3]

vi. Hester Blodgett was born on 2 June 1730. She married Ezekiel Pierce, Jr. on 8 July 1749 in Plainfield. [11] He might be the Ezekiel—a young man—who died in 1751 in Plainfield. [8]
