Ellis Barron (say 1600–1676)

Ellis Barron was born say 1600. He died on 30 October 1676 in Watertown. [1] According to Savage, his first wife's name was Grace. [2] He married second as her second husband Hannah Hammond. [3] Hannah, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Paine) Hammond, was baptised on 14 July 1616 in Lavenham, Suffolk. [3] She died on 1 September 1685 in Watertown. [1] She married First Timothy Haukins by 1637. [3] He died before 27 February 1651, when inventory was taken on his estate. [3]

The origins of Ellis Barron are unknown. He first appears in the New England records in a 2 June 1641 list of freemen. [4]

Ellis Barron Sr. was chosen constable on 4 November 1657 in Watertown. [5, 52] He (or his son Ellis) was chosen a trustee on 4 (9) 1667 and 4 (9) 1672. [5, 90,112] He or his son was asked to take an inventory of the town on 1 July 1670, and then was asked to take a new one the following November. [5, 99,102]

Ellis received a homestead of about ten acres in Watertown, bounded by the land of Thomas Boyson, Richard Linton, James Cutler and Thomas Smith. [6, 121] Ellis hired Brabrick's land for seven years at 36 shillings per year on 27 (12) 1665. The town later sized this land and sold it to Ellis with its housing for 45 pounds. On 23 (12) 1674 Ellis asked the town selectman to record that he had fully paid for the land. [5, 87,93,122]

Ellis made his will on 26 October 1676. He mentions his eldest son Ellis, his son John, his granddaughter Elizabeth Barron, and his seven children. [7]

Hannah Barron, widow of Watertown, made her will on 18 August 1683 and it was probated on 6 October 1640. She bequeathed her house and land to her son Timothy and left bequests to her daughter Hannah Barron's children. [3]
