ISAAC READ (1704–1780), son of Thomas Read and Mary Bigelow

EXPERIENCE WILLIS (c. 1707–1787), daughter of Samuel Willis and Susanna Gleason


Isaac, the son of Thomas Read and Mary (Bigelow) Bruce, was born on 23 February 1704 in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He was buried on 28 May 1780 in Sudbury. [2] He married Experience Willis on 11 February 1729/30 in Sudbury. [1]

Experience, the daughter of Samuel Willis and Susanna Gleason, was born about 1707. [2] She was baptized on 10 April 1709 in Sudbury. [2] She was buried on 6 August 1787, age 80, in Sudbury. [2]

Isaac's name was spelled either Read or Reed.

Isaac was on the 1747/8 muster roll of Captain Josiah Brown's company in Sudbury. [3]

In 1753 a building was rented from Isaac Reed by the town of Sudbury to serve as a workhouse. In 1763 the town chose overseers, including Mr. Isaac Reed. [3]

A Sudbury town record dated 14 October 1761 says, "Town Dr. to Mr. Isaac Reed for sledding wood and assisting to repair a house for those who may have the small pox." [3]

Isaac Read, yeoman of Sudbury, made his will on 15 May 1780. His heirs were his wife Experience; his daughter Lois Hill; his grandson Nathan Read, son of his son Isaac; his son Jacob; his daughters Experience, Sarah, Mary and Ruth. He named his son Jacob his executor. The witnesses were Jonathan Robinson, Aaron Haynes, and Joseph Read. Probate was on 14 June 1780 and Jacob and Nathan agreed to submit the resolution of their differences to a court commission. Agreement was reached on 15 July 1780. [4]

i. Isaac Read was born on 15 January 1730/1. He was baptized on 17 January 1730/1 in Sudbury. [2] He died on 3 April 1759 in Sudbury. [2] Isaac, Jr. married first Lydia Goodenow on 16 January 1755 in Sudbury. [1] She died on 2 January 1757 in Sudbury. [2] He married second Mary Haynes on 12 December 1758 in Sudbury. [1] She married second John Goodenow on 19 March 1761 in Sudbury. [2][1]

Isaac Read, yeoman, William Rice, yeoman, and David Goodenow, gentleman, all of Sudbury, posted bond on the estate of Isaac's son Isaac Read, Jr., late of Sudbury, on 16 April 1759. [4]

ii. Jacob Read was born on 27 December 1732. He died on 4 October 1797 in Sudbury. [2] He married first Patience Goodenow on 28 February 1757 in Sudbury. [1] Patience, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Rice) Goodenough, was born on 12 June 1735 and was buried on 6 February 1795 in Sudbury. [2] He married second Esther (Maynard) Goodenow on 22 December 1796. [2] Esther, the daughter of John and Esther (Rice) Maynard, was born on 4 May 1752 in Sudbury and died there on 9 November 1838. [2] She married first Aaron Goodenow, Jr. on 9 July 1772. [2] She married third Daniel Sanger on 7 February 1799. [2] He died on 27 September 1807 in Framingham. [2]

iii. Experience Read was born on 6 November 1734. She was baptized on 10 November 1734. She married Josiah Child.

iv. Sarah Read was born on 28 December 1736. She was baptized on 9 January 1737 in Sudbury. [2] She died in 1808 in Westminster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. [2] She married Norman Sever on 14 March 1755 in Sudbury. [1] He died on 31 July 1787 in Westminster. [2]

Norman and Sarah had children born in 1755 and 1757 in Sudbury. [1]

v. Samuel Read was born on 19 February 1738/9. He was baptized on 4 March 1738/9 in Sudbury. [2] He probably died young.

vi. Mary Read was born on 19 March 1740/1. She was baptized on 22 March 1740/1 in Sudbury. [2] She died on 19 July 1831 in Westminster. [2] She married Josiah Puffer on 29 November 1759 in Sudbury. [1] Josiah, the son of Jabez and Thankful, was born on 21 March 1735/6 in Sudbury. [1, 114] He died on 9 July 1806 in Westminster. [2]

vii. Ruth Read was born on 31 August 1743. She died on 2 December 1812 in Shrewsbury, Worcester County. [2] She married Daniel Noyes, Jr. on 1 November 1764 in Sudbury. [1] Daniel, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Gilbert) Noyes, was born on 10 June 1740 and died on 3 February 1824 in Shrewsbury. [2]

viii. Samuel Read was born on 5 August 1746. He was baptized on 8 September 1745 in Sudbury. [2] He probably died before 15 May 1780.

ix. Lois Read was baptized on 12 February 1749 in Sudbury. [2] She died about 1814. [2] She married Jonathan Hill. [2] He died on 16 October 1826 in Framingham. [2]

x. Asahel Read was born in March 1753. He was baptized on 20 May 1753 in Sudbury. [2] He was killed at the Battle of Lexington on 19 April 1775. [2] He was buried on 22 April 1775 in Sudbury. [2]

Asahel was in Captain John Nixon's company of Sudbury Minute Men. [2]
