JOSEPH CALEF (1742–1832), son of William Calef and Lois Sawyer

HANNAH PETTINGILL (1747–1793), daughter of Benjamin Pettingill and Elizabeth Stickney


Joseph, the son of William Calef, was born on 12 December 1742 in Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. [1] He died on 19 May 1832 in Salisbury, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He married first Hannah Pettingill on 30 October 1765. [1] He married second Sarah Cushing of Salisbury on 7 January 1796. [1] Sarah was born in 1743 and died on 10 January 1832 in Salisbury. [1][2]

Hannah Pettingill (or Pettingell), the daughter of Benjamin Pettingill and Elizabeth Stickney, was born on 17 January 1747 in Plaistow, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. [2][3] She died on 5 December 1793, age 45, probably in Salisbury.

Joseph and Hannah are buried in the South Road Cemetery in Salisbury. Joseph's gravestone says, "Dea Joseph Calef died May 19 1823 Aged 81." Hannah's says, "In memory of Mrs. Hannah, Wife of Mr. Joseph Calef, who died Decr 5, 1793 in the 46th year of her age." [4]

Deacon Joseph Calef inherited his father's homestead and 100 acres. He was a farmer. [1]

Joseph Calef—yeoman of Salisbury, [then in] Hillsborough County, Maine—made his will on 19 June 1810. He left his wife Sarah the use of a room in house with a privilege in the cellar, and the use of his household furniture for life. He also left her a good cow and four good sheep for life; six bushels of Indian corn, two bushels of rye, four bushels of wheat, 100 pounds of pork, and five pounds of beef annually, as well as wood and fire at all times and such other articles as might be necessary for her support. He left his son Nathaniel Calef 20 dollars and his son Joseph Calef 80 dollars. His wearing apparel was to be divided between his sons Nathaniel, Joseph, and Benjamin. He left his daughters Elizabeth Walker, Lois Martin, Judith Wortly, Rebecca Huntoon, and Dorothy Wortly 20 dollars each and his household furniture (except his death) at the death of his wife. He left his son Benjamin all his real estate and the residue of his personal estate. He named his son Benjamin, yeoman of Salisbury his executor. Probate was on 7 June 1823. [5]

i. Elizabeth Calef was born on 1 October 1767. She died on 14 November 1829. She married John Walker.

ii. Nathaniel Calef was born on 26 October 1769. He died on 29 April 1844. [1] He married first Elizabeth Hall in 1790. [1] Elizabeth, the daughter of David and Mehitable Hall, was born on 4 December 1770 in Salisbury and died on 28 January 1819. [1] Nathaniel married second Sarah Pettingill Little. [1]

Deacon Nathaniel Calef was a soldier in Captain Joseph Kimball's company in the War of 1812. [1]

iii. Lois Calef was born on 4 December 1770. She died in November 1844 in Chelsea, Vermont and was buried in Corinth Center, Corinth, Vermont. [1] She married as his second wife Samuel Martin on 11 January 1796. [1] Samuel, the son of Jonathan and Sarah (Quinby) Martin of Bradford, was born in 1759 in Goffstown, New Hampshire and died on 26 November 1847. [1] His first wife "is given as" Sarah Collins. [1]

iv. Joseph Calef was born on 3 January 1773. He died on 24 July 1824 in Salisbury. [1] He married Esther Stevens on 12 November 1795. [1] Esther, the daughter of Major Ebenezer Stevens, was born on 12 May 1773 in Salisbury and died on 12 November 1859 in Washington, New Hampshire. [1]

v. Hannah Calef was born on 4 November 1774. She died in 1851. [1] She married Ezra Meloon on 7 February 1797. [1] Ezra, the son of Nathaniel and Bathsheba Meloon, was born in 1771. [1]

vi. Judith Calef was born on 3 January 1777. She died in Bradford, Vermont. [1] She married Jesse Worthley (Wortly). [1]

vii. Rebecca Calef was born on 26 January 1779. She died on 17 September 1836 in Hanover, New Hampshire. [1] She married John Huntoon on 25 October 1798. [1] John, the son of Benjamin and ___ (Webster) Huntoon, was born on 15 July 1773 and died on 26 November 1838. [1]

viii. Dorothy Calef was born on 24 April 1781. She died in Warner, New Hampshire. [1] She married Asa Sargeant of Warner in Salisbury, New Hampshire. [1] On 19 June 1810 she was married to ___ Wortly.

ix. Benjamin Calef was born on 22 June 1783. He died on 17 March 1784. [1]

x. Benjamin Calef was born on 13 July 1786. He died on 18 May 1854. [1] He married Rachel Blaisdell on 13 July 1815 in Salisbury. [1] Rachel the daughter of Major Isaac Blaisdell, was born on 20 October 1791 and died on 4 September 1872. [1]
