JACOB HARDY (1677–1753), son of Thomas Hardy and Mercy Tenney

SARAH CLARK (d. 1767)

Jacob, the son of Thomas and Mercy Hardy, was born on 25 March 1677 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He died there on 8 June 1753. [VRR][2, "probably"] He married Sarah Clark on 27 June 1706 in Bradford. [1][2]

Sarah is probably the "ancient" widow of Jacob who died on 4 June 1767 in Bradford. [1]

Jacob and Sarah were admitted to the Bradford church in April 1709. [2]

Children of Jacob Hardy and Sarah Clark:

i. Elizabeth Hardy was born on 11 March 1707 in Bradford. She died on 11 May 1737 in Bradford. She married Samuel Stickney.

ii. Moses Hardy was born on 12 February 1707/8 in Bradford. [1][2] He married first Dorothy Hardy on 22 April 1729 in Bradford. [1][2] Dorothy, the daughter of Thomas and Rose Hardy, was born on 5 August 1710 in Bradford. She died there on 22 March 1760. [1][2] Moses married second Mary (Stickney) Boynton on 3 December 1760 in Newbury. [1][2] Mary was the widow of David Boynton. [2]

iii. Phebe Hardy was born on 2 April 1711 in Bradford. [1][2] She married Thomas Johnson of Amesbury on 4 or 14 March 1732/3 in Bradford. [1][2]

iv. Jeremiah (Jeremy) Hardy was born on 31 May 1713 in Bradford. [1][2] He died there suddenly of small pox on 19 May 1777, age 64. [1] He married Rachel Hardy on 29 August 1734 in Bradford. [1][2] Rachel, the daughter of Thomas and Rose Hardy, was born on 26 March 1714 in Bradford. [1] She died there of consumption on 18 July 1769. [1] The inscription on Jeremiah's gravestone in the ancient burial ground in Bradford says: [3]

In MEMOrY OF Mr JEREMIAH HARDY WHO DIED IN THE YEAR 1777 WITH THE SMALL POX AGED 64.

v. Andrew Hardy was born on 11 March 1714/5 in Bradford. [1][2] He died there on 14 February 1778. [1] He married Ann Hardy on 27 February 1738/9 in Bradford. [1][2] Ann, the daughter of Jacob and Hannah Hardy, was born on 3 December 1716 in Bradford. [1][2] She died on 8 April 1797 in Stoddard, New Hampshire, where she was living with her son Isaiah. [2]

vi. Isaac Hardy was born on 15 August 1721 in Bradford. [1] Josiah Hardy was baptized there on 10 September 1721. [1] Isaiah—a young man—died in December 1737 in Bradford. [1]

Isaac, Josiah, and Isaiah are presumed to be the same person, but there is a sufficient gap between the births of Andrew and Sarah that they could be two or three separate people. [2] suggests that Josiah and Isaiah are the same person and Isaac is a different person.

vii. Sarah Hardy was born on 25 June 1723 in Bradford. [1][2] She may be the Sarah who married Joseph Bradley of Haverhill on 5 February 1753 in Haverhill. [1]
