JOHN CALEF (c. 1675–1748), son of Robert Calef and Mary Unknown

DEBORAH KING (bp. 1679), daughter of William King and Deborah Prince


John, the son of Robert Calef, was probably born about 1675 in England. [1] He died between March and May 1748 in Chester, New Hampshire. [1] He married Deborah King of Boston on 10 June 1702. [2, 77, intention on 23 May 1703][1]

Deborah, the daughter of William and Deborah (Prince) King of Boston, was baptized on 18 May 1679 in Hingham, Massachusetts. [1] She was living

Deborah's brother James King calles her "my sister Deborah Calef" in his will of 9 September 1710. [3]

John was a petitioner for the grant of Nottingham, New Hampshire and a grantor of Chester. He moved to Chester in 1734 and was granted liberty to build a fulling mill. [1]

John was a selectman in Chester three times. [1]

John made his will on 11 March 1747/8. He named his wife Deborah, his six sons, and the children of his daughter Mary Etheridge. He named his son Robert his executor. [1]

i. John Calef was born on 3 June 1703. He died on 25 December 1754 in Newbury. [2, 558][1, 1755] He married Naomi Elliot of Amesbury on 31 October 1739 in Amesbury, Massachusetts. [2, 77][1] Naomi, the daughter of John and Naomi (Tuxbury) Elliot of Amesbury, was born on 13 November 1709. [1] She died on 6 February 1754 in Newbury. [2, 558][1]

John was a school teacher. [1]

John went to sea and was captured and held prisoner in France for seven years. [1]

ii. Deborah Calef was born on 21 January 1704/5. She died before 1747. [1]

iii. William Calef, was born on 17 July 1706 in Newbury, Massachusetts. He died on 5 March 1784. He married first Sarah Cheney. He married second Lois Sawyer.

iv. Mary Calef was born on 4 February 1707/[8?]. She died before 11 March 1748. [1] She married Nathan Etheridge on 13 September 1727. [1]

v. James Calef was born on 31 January 1709/[10?]. He probably died in 1757 at Fort William Henry. [1] He married Abigail Jewett on 2 January 1734/5 in Newbury. [1][2, 77] Abigail, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Hopkinson) Jewett, was born on 18 May 1714 in Rowley, Massachusetts and died after 1776, probably in Dover, New Hampshire. [1]

James was a cloth maker. [1]

James was a soldier, sent to reinforce Fort William Henry. [1]

vi. King Calef was born on 5 November 1711. He married Eunice Allen on 21 February 1733. [1] Eunice, the daughter of John and Alice (Bennett) Allen, was born on 2 July 1710 in Rochester, New Hampshire. [1]

King was a cordwainer. [1]

vii. Sergeant Robert Calef was born on 7 May 1715. [1] He died in 1788 in Chester. [1] He married first Elizabeth Bradley on 12 October 1738 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. [1] He married second Hannah (French) Flanders, the widow of John Flanders on 8 June 1748 in South Hampton, Hew Hampshire. [1] He married third Ann (Clement) Whitaker on 16 October 1755 in Haverhill. [1] He married fourth Mary (Folsom) Bradley. Mary, the daughter of John and Mary (Sewall) Folsom of Exeter, New Hampshire, was born in 1719 and died on 10 August 1817. [1] She married first Samuel Bradley, who was killed by Indians in 1746. [1]

Robert carried on his father's fulling mill in Chester. She was a sergeant in the Louisburg Expedition of 1745. [1]

viii. Joseph Calef was born on 31 October 1718. He died on 21 December 1793. [1] He married Elizabeth Jewell of Amesbury on 30 September 1746. [1]

Five of Joseph's children died of a throat distemper in 1755. [1]

ix. Daniel Calef was born on 10 January 1720. [1] He died on 17 May 1796. [1] He married Mary Gile on 6 March 1743. [1] Mary, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Heath) Gile, died on 17 August 1745 in Chester. [1]

Daniel was a maker of leather britches and a trader. [1]
