Robert Calef's English Ancestry [1]

William Calef (Colfe) was born about 1545. He was buried on 1 May 1600. He married Elizabeth ___. He was a yeoman of Stanstead. He made his will on 17 April 1600; it was prove by his son Jerome on 15 May 1600. He was "undoubtedly" a son or grandson of the William who was taxed in Stanstead in 1524, and was probably born between 1490 and 1500.

Children of William Calef:

i. Alice Calef married Robert Salter in 1592.

ii. Elizabeth Calef was baptized on 21 April 1570 and buried in August 1576.

iii. Jerome Calef was baptized on 11 June 1572.

iv. John Calef was baptized on 20 July 1575. He may be the John Calf who married Anne Head in 1615 in Bury St. Edmonds.

v. William Calef

Jerome Calef was baptized on 11 June 1572 and buried on 21 January 1637/8. He married Anne Kerrington in 1600 in Glemsford.

Children of Jerome Calef and Anne Kerrington:

i. Jerome Calef was baptized on 29 September 1601 and buried on 27 January 1639/40. He was a clothier in Stanstead.

ii. William Calef was baptized on 12 June 1603 and was living on 31 December 1658. He married Frances ___.

iii. Edward Calef was baptized on 12 May 1605 and was buried on 10 April 1607.

iv. Edward Calef (twin) was baptized on 31 May 1607 and buried on 21 May 1672.

v. Ralf Calef (twin) was baptized on 31 May 1607.

vi. Joseph Calef was baptized on 23 September 1609.

vii. Thomas Calef was baptized on 20 August 1612. He probably died young.

viii. Robert Calef was baptized on 14 May 1618 and buried on 4 January 1658. He was a clothier in Stanstead.

Joseph Calef was baptized on 23 September 1609 and he died before 31 December 1658.

Children of Joseph Calef:

i. Joseph Calef was baptized on 31 August 1644.

ii. Jeremy Calef was baptized on 2 October 1i646.

iii. Robert Calef was baptized on 2 November 1648.

Robert Calef, the son of Joseph Calef, was baptized on 2 November 1648 in Stanstead, county Suffolk, England. [1] He died on 13 April 1719, age 71, in Boston. [1] He married Mary Unknown about 1670. [1]

Robert was a Boston merchant. He opposed Cotton Mather and wrote More Wonders of the Invisible World, which exposed the witchcraft delusion. See his Wikipedia entry.

Children of Robert and Mary Calef:

i. Joseph Calef was probably born about 1672 in England. He died on 28 December 1707 in Ipswich and is buried in the First Parish graveyard in Ipswich. [1] He married Mary Ayer on 2 May 1693 in Boston. [1]

Joseph was a clothier and physician. [1]

ii. Robert Calef was probably born about 1674 in England. [1] He died on 4 December 1722 in Chatham, Massachusetts. [1] He married Margaret Barton on 23 December 1699 in Boston. [1] Margaret, the daughter of James and Margaret Barton of Boston and Newton, died between May and September 1744. [1]

Robert was found drowned; the coroner's enquest found that he committed suicide. [1]

Robert spelled his name "Calfe." He was a cloth maker and merchant. He was a member of the Ancient and Honourable Artillery Company. [1]

iii. John Calef was probably born about 1675 in England. He died between March and May 1748 in Chester, New Hampshire. [1] He married Deborah King.

iv. Jeremiah Calef was probably born about 1683 in England. [1] He died on 6 March 1762 in Exeter, New Hampshire. [1] He married Lucy Chadbourne on 2 December 1708 in Portsmouth. [1] Lucy, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Heard) of Kittery, died in May or June 1752. [1]

Jeremiah was a clothier. [1]

v. Martha Calef was probably born in England. [1] She married Solomon Hewes on 28 December 1700 in Boston. [1] Solomon, the son of George and Mary Hewes of Newbury, was born on 2 January 1675 in Salisbury, New Hampshire and died before 1744. [1]

Solomon was a joiner. [1]

vi. Mary Calef was born in 1686 in England. [1] She died in November 1764. [1] She married Dr. Samuel Stevens as his second wife on 10 September 1712 in Roxbury. [1] Samuel was the son of Captain Timothy and Sarah (Davis) Stevens. [1]

Samuel and Mary were the grandparents of founding father Joseph Warren. [1]

vii. Edward Calef was born on 30 January 1688 in Boston. [1]

viii. Daniel Calef was born on 27 December 1691 in Boston. [1] He died on 13 April 1712 and was buried in the Elliot Cemetery in Boston. [1]
