JOSEPH BALLARD (1667–1732), son of Joseph Ballard and Elizabeth Phelps
REBECCA JOHNSON (c. 1675–aft. 1728), daughter of Timothy Johnson and Rebecca Aslebee
Joseph, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ballard, was born on 26 January 1667 in Andover. [1] He died on 1 September 1732 in Andover. [1] He married Rebecca Johnson on 17 August 1698. [2]
Rebecca, the daughter of Timothy Johnson and Rebecca Aslebee, was born about 1675. [3] She died after 10 July 1728.
On 5 April 1727 Joseph Ballard of Andover conveyed his homestead and land in Andover that his father had given to him on 26 March 1719 to his his son Timothy. Joseph's father's gift had the stipulation that the property was to go to Timothy after the death of Joseph and his wife. Joseph reserved space in the house for himself for life and Timothy was to pay five pounds each to his surviving brothers and sisters, except Elizabeth and Penelope, who had already had their share. [3]
On 10 July 1728 Rebecca Ballard signed a receipt for ten pounds willed to her by her uncle John Aslebee. [3]
Children of Ensign Joseph Ballard: Births recorded in Andover. [1]
i. Joseph Ballard was born on 2 June 1699. He died on 29 August 1703 in Andover. [1]
ii. Elizabeth Ballard was born on 14 January 1700/1. Elizabeth, the widow of Thomas, died on 31 July 1782, age 82, in Andover. [1] She married Thomas Abbott on 28 January 1724/5 in Andover. [1][2] Thomas was probably the son of Thomas Abbott, born on 3 January 1698 in Andover. [1] He died on 11 July 1774, age 76, in Andover. [1]
iii. Timothy Ballard is probably the unknown child who was born on 24 ___ 1702. [1][2, 24 November 1702] He died between 14 May 1770 and 6 December 1773. He married Hannah Chandler on 4 June 1729. [2]
Timothy, yeoman of Andover, made his will on 14 May 1770/6; it was proved on 17 November 1773. He mentioned his wife Hannah, the heirs of his son Timothy, his sons Joseph and Nathan, his eldest daughter Mary Chandler, his daughter Hannah Abbott, and his daughters Elizabeth, Phebe, and Dorothy. His inventory was presented on 17 November 1773; it amounted to £1,057-11-08. [4]
iv. Benjamin Ballard was probably born in 1703/4. He died on 21 February 1703/4.
v. Penelope Ballard was born in probably 1705. She married Nathaniel Abbott.
vi. Joseph Ballard was probably born in 1706/7.
vii. Dorcas Ballard was born on 5 August 1709.
One of the unknown children might be the Dorcas Ballard who married Stephen Osgood, Jr. on 4 March 1730/1 in Andover. [1] This Stephen was the son of Stephen and Hannah (Chandler) Osgood, born on 22 June 1700 in Andover. [1][5] Lieutenant Stephen Osgood died of a "sort of lethargy" on 24 March 1772 in Tewksbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [1][6]
Stephen Osgood, yeoman of Tewksbury, being advanced in years, made his will on 15 August 1769; his son posted bond on 2 June 1772. He mentioned his wife Dorcas. [7]
viii. Unknown Ballard was born on 1 March 1710/1.
ix. Ebenezer Ballard was born on 2 July 1713. He probably died young.
x. Dorothy Ballard was born on 26 January 1714/5. She married first Benjamin Smith of Newbury on 16 August 1734 in Andover. [1][8] Benjamin, the son of Benjamin and Hannah (Soomes) Smith, was born on 9 August 1712 in Newbury. [8] He died intestate, probably shortly before Dorothy Smith requested that her brother-in-law administer Benjamin's estate on 1 March 1741/2. [4] Dorothy married second, perhaps as his third wife, Obadiah Johnson on 26 September 1748 in Andover. [1] Obadiah, the son of James and Elizabeth Johnson, was born after 1695 in Andover. [1] He married first Hannah Osgood on 12 February 1724/5 in Andover. [1] She died on 11 March 1728/9 in Andover. [1]
The long gap between Hannah's death and Obadiah's marriage to Dorothy suggests that he might have had a second wife.
