Hannah Chandler, the daughter of William and Agnes (Bayford) Chandler, was baptized on 22 May 1630 in Bishop's Stortford. [4] She died on 11 June 1711, age 82, in Andover. [2][4] She married second as his third wife [her step-brother] Reverend Francis Dane after 18 February 1688/9 or 1690 in Andover. [4][5] Francis, the son of John and Frances Dane, was baptized on 20 November 1615 in Bishop's Stortford. [4]

George Abbott of Rowley

George Abbott of Rowley, who made his will about 1647, probably left four children George, Nehemiah, and Thomas, Jr. [6, 1: 130, 142] The similarity of the names creates some potential genealogical confusion.

In the early records, Abbott was spelled with one or two b's, one or two t's and an e, o, or u for the second vowel. In researching the family, Soundex searches are the way to go.

George deposed that he was about 40 on 9 April 1657, between 40 and 50 on 24 June 1661, and about 50 on 24 June 1662. [6, 2: 29, 307–8, 404]

George came to New England in 1637. [1]

Hannah came to New England with her parents in 1637. [4]

George was "one of the first settlers of Andover, 1643." [2] George's house in Andover was fortified as a garrison and occupied by his descendants for seven generations before it was demolished about 1860. [1]

George was not active in public life. He was on the grand jury at the 28 September 1658 and 16 September 1676 quarterly courts in Ipswich. [6, 2: 111; 6: 196] He was a constable on 19 March 1662/3. [6, 3: 132] He was a surveyor of the highways in 1673 and brander of cattle in 1676. [1]

The will of "George Abbut" of Andover, co. Essex, aged and "crasey" in body, is dated 12 December 1681. "Considering the great love and affection I have unto my loving wife Hannah Abbut and the tender love she hath had to me and her care and diligence in helping me to get and save what God has blessed us with and also her prudence in management of the same, I leave her my whole estate for life, she to dispose of the same among my children with the advice of my overseers, my eldest son John Abbot to have a double portion." He made his wife his sole executrix and his brothers [-in-law] Thomas and William Chandler and his friend John Barker to be overseers. His witnesses, Thomas Chandler and Timothy Abbott, testified on 28 March 1682. His inventory was taken on 18 January 1681 and presented in court by Hannah on 28 March 1682; it amounted to £587-12-05. The estate papers refer to a portion already given to his his eldest son, John. [7]

Hannah Dane, Francis Dane, Sr., William Abbott, George Abbott, and John Abbott, Sr. signed the letter to the Court of Assize in Salem in support of Mrs. Mary Osgood, Eunice Frye, Deliverance Dane, Sarah Wilton, and Abigail Barker, all accused of witchcraft. [8]

Hannah is a rare example of a woman in Massachusetts at the time conveying property in a deed alone. On 10 February 1706/7 she conveyed land to her sons: " ... I Hannah Abbott : alias Dane Relick to gorg Abbott late of Andover deceased for the natural afectean I bare to my sons : Timothy : Thomas : and Nathaniel Abbott : doe give to my sons : above named : all my rights in the common and undivided land in the Township of Andover aforesaid ... ." [9]
