Thomas Chandler of Bishop’s Stortford was born about 1500.

Thomas Chandler of Bishop's Stortford was born about 1528. He married Joan Page.

Generation 4

Henry Chandler of Bishop's Stortford was born there about 1560 and was buried there on 17 December 1618. He married Anne ___ about 1590. She married second as his second wife John Miller, Sr. of Bishop's Stortford on 8 July 1622.

Henry was a glover.

Generation 5

William Chandler was baptized on 12 October 1595 in Bishop's Stortford.

William Chandler was baptized on 12 October 1595 in Bishop's Stortford, co. Hertfordshire. [1] He died of consumption on 19 January 1641/2 in Roxbury. [2] William, "householder" was buried on 19 January 1641/2 in Roxbury. [3] He married first Alice Thorogood of Farnham, co. Essex (the parish north of Bishop's Stortford) on 29 January 1621/2 in Bishop's Stortford. [1] She was buried on 15 June 1625 in Bishop's Stortford. [1] William married second Agnes (Anne, Annis) Bayford on 6 November 1625 in Farnham. [1]

The town record says that William died on 26: 11m: 1640/1. [3]

William was the second cousin of Margaret Chandler, who married William Denison.

Agnes Bayford was baptized on 12 June 1603 in Farnham. [1] She died on 17 March 1683 in Sudbury. [4][5] She married second as his second wife John Dane of Barkhampstead, Bishop's Stortford, Ipswich and Roxbury on 2 July 1643 in Roxbury. [1][3][4] He was buried on 14 September 1658 in Roxbury. [1][4] Agnes married third Deacon John Parmenter of Little Yeldham, co. Essex, Bures St. Mary, cos. Essex and Suffolk and Sudbury on 9 August 1660 in Sudbury. [1, in Roxbury][4[5] John, the son of William Parmenter, was born about 1588. [5] He died on 1 May 1671, age 83, in Sudbury. [4][5] He married first Bridget ___, probably about 1609 in England. [4][5] She died on 6 April 1660 in Sudbury. [4][5]

Agnes was one of the most common feminine names in the English speaking world for over four centuries. Its medieval pronunciation was Annis, and it was used interchangeably with Anne.

The church records say, "In 1683 m. 1, d. 17 died Old Mother Parmenter a blessed saint." [4]

William was a pointer; he made lace tags for fastening clothes. [1]

William and Agnes Chandler and their four children settled in Roxbury in 1637. [4] William was a freeman on 13 May 1640. [2]

William was a small property holder in Roxbury. According to a Roxbury census dated between 1638 and 1640, he had a family of seven and owned 22 acres worth six pounds. [4]

English Ancestry of Agnes Bayford [1][10]

Generation 1

Richard Bayford of Farnham was born about 1535 and died between 17 April and 15 May 1599. He married Joan Searle on 10 April 1564 in Farnham.

Richard was a ploughwright. He made his will on 17 April 1599; probate was on 15 May 1599.

Generation 2

Francis Bayford was baptized on 13 April 1567 in Farnham, co. Essex. He died shortly before 3 December 1622.

Francis Bayford, husbandman of Farnham, made his will on 9 June 1614; it was proved on 3 December 1622.

Generation 3

Agnes Bayford was baptized on 12 June 1603 in Farnham.

The Roxbury records say: [4, 2–3]

William Chandler came to N.E. about the year 1637. He brought four small children: Thomas, Hannah, John, William; his fifth child Sarah was born here; he lived a very religious and godly life among us, and fell into a Consumption to which he had, a long time, been inclined; he lay near a year sick, in all which time his faith, patience & Godliness & Contentation So Shined that Christ was much glorified in him—he was a man of Weake parts but Excellent faith and holiness; he was a very thankful man, and much magnified Gods goodness. He was poor, but God prepared the hearts of his people to him that he never wanted that which was (at least in his Esteem) Very plentiful and Comrortable to him—he died—in the year 1641 and left a Sweet memory and Savor behind him.

John Eliot's Roxbury church records say: [2, 54]

William Chandler, came to Roxbury about 1637 with wife Hannah. Freeman May 13, 1640. He lived a very religious and Godly life among us. He died Jan. 19, 1641/2 and left a sweet memory & savor behind him.

John Dane petitioned the General Court in Boston for William Chandler's house and land because John had paid more of William's debts than the property was worth and had brought up William's children. On 19 October 1649 the court responded, "In Ansr to the petition of John Dayne ffor the Setling the house and lands of Wm. Chandler (whose widow he marryed and Children brought up) on him, the said John Dayne, is request is granted by this Corte." [4]

John Dane left his wife "Annie" his movable goods, not otherwise given, and made her his executrix. [4] John Parmenter, in his will of 1671, left his wife "Annisce," "the use of my warming pan so long as she remain my widow." [4]

Children of William Chandler and Alice Thorogood:

i. Elizabeth Chandler was baptized on 10 January 1622/3 at Bishop's Stortford and buried there on 30 September 1636. [1]

ii. Sarah Chandler was baptized on 19 December 1624 at Bishop's Stortford and buried there on 19 January 1626/7. [1]

Children of William Chandler and Agnes Bayford: All except the last baptized at Bishop's Stortford. [1]

iii. William Chandler was baptized on 26 March 1627 and buried on 27 November 1633 in Bishop's Stortford. [1]

iv. Captain Thomas Chandler was baptized on 9 August 1628. [1] He died in 15 ___ 1703. [4] He married Hannah Brewer. [4] She was "perhaps" the daughter of Daniel Brewer. [1] She died on 25 October 1717 in Andover. [4]

Thomas was a blacksmith and iron worker. [1] He was an early proprietor of Andover. [4] He was a representative to the General Court in 1678 and 1679. [1][4]

v. Hannah Chandler was baptized on 22 May 1630 in Bishop's Stortford. She died on 11 June 1711 Andover. She married first George Abbott. She married second Reverend Francis Dane.

vi. Henry Chandler was baptized on 13 August 1632. [1] He died young. [1]

iii. Deacon John Chandler was baptized on 27 July 1634. [1] He died on 15 April 1703 in Woodstock, Connecticut. [4] He married Elizabeth Douglas on 16 February 1658 in Roxbury. [3][4] Elizabeth, the daughter of William and Anna (Matlat or Motley) Douglas of Ipswich, Boston, and New London, was born on 26 August 1641 in Boston. [1] She died on 23 September 1705 in New London. [1][4]

John is buried in Woodstock, the inscription on his gravestone says, "Here lies buried the body of Deacon John Chandler aged abot 68 years died April 15th 1703." [6]

John Chandler, the first sexton in Roxbury, moved to Woodstock in 1686. [2, 61] He was deacon of the church in Woodstock. [4]

iv. William Chandler was baptized on 20 March 1635/6. [1] He died in 1698 in Andover. [1][4, in Billerica] He married first Mary Dane on 18 or 24 August 1658 in Ipswich (recorded in Andover). [1][4] Mary, the daughter of Dr. John and Eleanor (Clark) Dane and granddaughter of William's stepfather John Dane, was born in 1638 in Ipswich. [1, born about 1639][4] She died on 10 May 1679 in Andover. [1][4][7] William married second Bridget (Henchman) Richardson on 8 October 1679. [1][4] Bridget, the widow of Lieutenant James Richardson, died on 6 March 1731. [4]

William was a yeoman and brickmaker. [1] He kept an inn on the road from Ipswich to Billerica. [4]

v. Sarah Chandler was born about 1638 in Roxbury. [1][8] She died after 29 December 1713 in Sandwich. [8] She married first William Cleaves (Cleves) of Roxbury on 4 November 1659. [1][4][8] He was killed by Indians on 29 April 1676 during King Philip's War at Sudbury. [1][4][8, 21 April] She married second ___ Stevens, probably in 1677 or 1678. [1][4][8] He died of smallpox on 13 December 1678. [8] She married third John Parker of Muddy River [Brookline]. [8] John, the son of John Parker, died on 30 January 1684/5. [8] She married fourth George Allen of Sandwich between 4 June 1686 and 3 June 1687. [8] He died before 17 April 1691. [8]
