JAMES TAYLOR (d. 1720)

MARY TAYLOR (1649–1700), daughter of Jonathan Taylor and Mary Wright


James Taylor was sick and died on 27 October 1720 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. [1] He was married to Mary Taylor on 17 January 1666 in Springfield by Judge John Pynchon. [1]

Mary Taylor was born on 1 (6) 1649 in Springfield. Mary, the wife of James, died on 18 March 1699/1700 in Springfield. [1]

James was a servant of John Pynchon; it is unknown where he came from. [2]

Land on the higher end of Chickuppe Plain on the west side of the Great River above the former grants in Springfield was granted to Abel Wright and James Taylor, as long as it did not exceed 50 acres, on 12 March 1661/2. James was granted six acres adjoining the northern side of the lots abutting the highway by the Great River on the condition that he built and settled on it within five years on 30 January 1662/3. On 5 January 1665/6 he was granted meadow and 30 acres in lieu of other grants that had been made to him, but there was insufficient land. He was to have 40 acres if possible and it was to be a low piece of land with a brook about half a mile from Pakatuck. On 11 January 1667/9 he was granted six acres on the west side of the river. He was granted 40 acres near the Southfield bounds on 2 February 1674/5. On 26 February 1665/6 James pledged six shillings for work on a new town mill in Springfield. He was chosen hay ward on 4 February 1678/9. [3]

James was an earlier proprietor of Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut and was granted 50 acres there in 1680. His houselot was on Springfield Road. [2] He later returned to Springfield.

James, Sr. was chosen surveyor for the west side of the Great River on 9 March 1696/7 in Springfield. [3] He was chosen hay ward on 8 March 1697/8. [3] He was chosen a tythingman on 14 March 1698/9. [3]

i. Rebecca Taylor was born on 18 November 1668. She died on 5 February 1668 in Springfield. [1]

ii. James Taylor was born on 26 November 1669. He died before 1739. James Taylor, Jr. married Dorothy Rogers on 21 February 1703/4 in Springfield. [1][3] Dorothy, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Exell) Rogers, was born on 21 February 1704. [3] She was the granddaughter of Richard and Hannah Exell. [3]

James's estate was distributed in 1739.[3]

iii. Mary Taylor was born on 28 December 1671 in Springfield. She married John Petty.

iv. John Taylor was born on 14 March 1672/3. He died on 19 November 1673 in Springfield. [1]

v. Samuel Taylor was born on 26 September 1674. He married first Ruth Smith after 28 April 1714 (intention) in Springfield. [1][4] He married second Joanna Smith of Suffield on 4 January 1726/7. [4]

vi. Elizabeth Taylor was born on 5 January 1677. She was sick and died on 27 November 1710 in Springfield. [1]

vii. Jonathan Taylor was born on 30 October 1679. He died on 14 October 1749. [3] He married Sarah, the daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Knowlton, after 26 January 1712 (intention). She might be the widow Sarah Taylor who died on 11 March 1675 in West Springfield. [3]

viii. Ebenezer Taylor was born on 26 August 1681. He was sick and died on 27 June 1689 in Springfield. [1]

ix. Thomas Taylor was born on 10 January 1683 in Suffield. [5]

x. Samuel Taylor was born on 6 April 1686. [1] He died on 18 December 1774, age 83, and was buried in the West Springfield cemetery. [3] He married Sarah Bagg on 17 January 1717. [3] She died on 2 May 1776, age 81. [3]

xi. Rebecca Taylor was born on 12 July 1689. [1]
