JOHN PETTY (1667–by 1724), son of John Petty and Ann Canning

MARY TAYLOR (1671–aft. 1724), daughter of James Tayler and Mary Taylor


John Petty was born on 21 (11, duplicate record) December 1667 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.1 He married Mary Taylor on 13 April 1693 in Springfield.1

Mary, the daughter of James and Mary Taylor, was born on 28 December 1671 in Springfield.1

In March 1694/5 Joseph Cooley and John Petty petitioned the town of Springfield for the use of 2000 pines to make resin.2

John was chosen tithing man on 9 March 1696/7 and 13 March 1704/5.3 He was chosen surveyor 18 times, first on 9 March 1696/7 and ending by 13 March 1715/6.3

John moved to North Brookfield.3

Inventory was taken on John's estate on 21 February 1723/4. He owned land, a yoke of oxen, a yoke of steers, two cows, three sheep, tools, household goods and old lumber. The total value was about 209 pounds. His widow Mary Petty, Ebenezer Petty and John Petty—the administrators of his estate—attested to the inventory on 11 March 1723/4 and his estate was probated that day.4

Children of John Petty and Mary Taylor:

i. Ebenezer Petty was born on 24 February 1693/[4?] in Springfield.1 He died before 12 February 1753.3 He married Rebecca Warner on 21 November 1725 in Northfield.5 She died on 4 July 1787 in Northfield.3

ii. Mary Petty was born on 26 October 1695 in Springfield. She married Robert Emmons.

iii. John Petty was born on 6 April 1701 in Springfield.1 He died in 1748, probably in Northfield.3 He married Margaret Alexander on 30 October 1734 in Northfield.5

iv. Sarah Petty (possible daughter) married Ashell Stebbins on 2 November 1727 in Northfield.1

iv. Joseph Petty was born about 1704.3 He became sick and died on 29 August 1710 in Springfield.1

v. Abigail Petty was born on 3 April 1713 in Springfield.1 She married as his second wife Pedajah Field on 11 January 1731/2 in Springfield.1 Pedajah, the son of John and Mary (Bennett) Field of Northampton, was born on 28 January 1707 in Deerfield and died on 24 February 1798 in Deerfield.3 He married first about 1730 Hannah Unknown.3
