Elizabeth Alden (c. 1624–1717), daughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins
William Pabodie was the son of John and Isabel Pabodie. [1] He was born about 1619, based on his gravestone. He died on 13 December 1707 died in Little Compton, Bristol County, then in Massachusetts. [2] He married Elizabeth, the daughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, on 20 or 26 (duplicate) December 1644 in Duxbury. [2][3][4]
William is buried in the Old Commons Burial Ground in Little Compton. His inscription says: [5]
Here lyeth bured ye body of William Pabodie who departed this life Decembr ye 13th 1707 in ye 88 yeare of his age.
Elizabeth, the daughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, was born about 1624. [4] She died on 31 May 1717 in Little Compton. [4] Her gravestone in Little Compton says that she was 93 when she died, but it was erected in 1882. [4]
Alden says that Elizabeth was born in 1622 or 1623 and was the first European woman born in New England. [1]
William and Elizabeth lived in Duxbury for many years and then moved to Little Compton. [2]
William was on the grand jury on 7 June 1648. He was a receiver of the excise on 4 June 1650. He was a deputy 22 times between 1654 and 1682. He was a frequent committee member. [6]
William wrote his will on 13 May 1707. He mentions his wife; his son William; his daughter Lydia "Greenill"—he says he already gave her a set of green curtains; his grandson Stephen Southworth, the son of his deceased daughter Rebecca; his gransons John and William, the sons of his son William; and his daughters. His daughters—he is careful to style each one his "natural" daughter, are named as Mary, Mercy, Martha, Priscilla, Ruth, Sarah, Hannah, Lydia, and his two deceased daughters Elizabeth and Rebecca. He left each of them or their heirs one shilling. The style suggests that he believed his wife might contest the will. He says that if she does or she remarries then she is to get only what the law would allow if he died intestate. Inventory, amounting to £407–14–00 was taken on 30 December 1797. Witnesses testified, bond was posted, and Mrs. Elizabeth Pabodie and her son William—his executors—took oath to the inventory on 27 February 1707/8. William Pabodie made oath to the accounting of his administration on 7 September 1709. [2]
