Captain Ebenezer Howes (c. 1673–1727), son of Jeremiah Howes and Sarah Prence

Sarah Gorham (1678–1755), daughter of Ensign Joseph Gorham and Sarah Sturgis


Ebenezer Howes was born about 1673. He died on 8 January 1726/[?7], age 53. [1] He married first Sarah Gorham of Yarmouth on 20 April 1699 in Yarmouth. [2][3] He married second Lydia Joyce on 20 November 1706 in Yarmouth. [2][4, 2 January 1706/7] Lydia was the daughter of Hosea Joyce and his wife Elizabeth Chipman. [4] She was born about 1685 and died on 4 November 1755.

Sarah, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Gorham, was born on 10 January 1678 in Yarmouth. [2][3, 16 January] Sarah, the wife of Ebenezer, died on 9 September 1705 [2], presumably of complications of childbirth.

Ebenezer, Sarah and Lydia are buried in the Howes Cemetery in North Dennis (then part of Yarmouth). Their inscriptions say: [5][6]

Here lyes Buried ye Body of Capt Ebenezeer Howes who Decd January 8 1726 Aged about 53 years.

Sarah Hows wife to Ebenezer Hows age about 27 years died Sept 9th 1705.

Here lyes ye Body of Mrs Lydia Howes wife to Capt Ebenezer Howes who Deparated this life Novbr the 4th 1733 in ye 71 year of her age.

Ebenezer made his will on 3 December 1726; it was proved on 13 February 1726/7. [4]

Children of Ebenezer Howes and Sarah Gorham: Births and the death of the unnamed son recorded in Yarmouth. The children are listed together and Thomas, Sarah, and the unnamed son are called the children of Ebenezer and Sarah. [2]

i. Thomas Howes (twin) was born on 22 January 1699. He died on 19 November 1764 and is buried in the Howes Cemetery. [5] Thomas Howes of East Yarmouth married Deborah Sears. [7]

ii. Sarah Howes (twin) was born on 22 January 1699. She married Ebenezer Sears.

iii. Elizabeth Howes was born on 28 September 1701. She is probably the Elizabeth who married Joseph Crosby on 10 January 1726 in Yarmouth.

Joseph and Elizabeth are buried in the Worden Cemetery in East Dennis. Their gravestones say: [5]

In Memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Crosby wife of Mr. Joseph Crosby wo died Mar 7th 1791 in her 90 Year

iv. Son Howes was born on 5 July 1704 and died the same month.

v. Ebenezer Howes was born on 8 September 1705.

Children of Ebenezer Howes and Lydia Joyce. Births recorded in Yarmouth as the children of Ebenezer and Lydia:

vi. Lydia Howes was born on 10 August 1709. She died on 5 January 1798, apparantly unmarried. Her gravestone in the Howes Cemetery says: [5]

In memory of Lydia Howes She died Jany 5 1787 in ye 78 Year of her age.

vii. Thankful Howes was born on 22 August 1711. She died on 27 June 1789. She married Samuel Paddock. He died on 27 July 1767.

Samuel and Thankful are buried in the Paddock Cemetery in East Dennis. The inscriptions on their gravestones say: {5]

Here lyes Buried ye Body of Mr Samuel Paddock Who Departed this Life July 27 1767 in ye 46th Year of his Age.

In Memory of Mrs Thankful widow of Mr Samuel Paddock She Died June 27 1789 in ye 78th Year of her Age.

viii. Marcy Howes was born on 27 December 1713. She died on 23 April 1752. [5] She married Aaron Crowell. [5] He died on 15 January 1796. [5] Aaron and Marcy are buried in the Dennis Village Cemetery in Dennis. [5]

ix. Anna Howes was born on 14 February 1715.

x. Prince Howes was born on 13 April 1718. He died on 9 January 1799.

Prince is buried in the Howes Cemetery. His inscription says: [5]

In memory of Mr Prince Howes He died Jan ye 9 1799 in the 80 Year Of his age.

xi. Susanna Howes was born on 10 October 1720. She died on 9 April 1763. She married Willard Sears. He died on 19 August 1765, age 50. He married second Margery Homer Sears. She died on 1 August 1795. [5] She married second as his second wife Benjamin Higgens. [5]

Willard and Susanna are buried in the Sears Cemetery in West Brewster. The inscriptions on their gravestones say: [5]

Here lies buried Mr Willard Sears who decd Augst ye 19th 1765 in ye 51st year of his age.

Here lies ye Body of Mrs Susanna Sears ye wife of Mr Willard Sears who decd. April ye 9th 1763 In ye 42nd year of her age.

xii. Mary Howes was born on 7 January 1722/3.
