JOHN JOYCE (d. 1666)
DOROTHY COCHET (d. 1679)
Mr. John Joyce of Yarmouth died on 21 December 1666 in Yarmouth. [1] He married Dorothy Cochet.
Mis Dorothy Joyce, wife of John Joyce, was buried on 12 January 1679 in Yarmouth. [1]
The 5 September 1657 will of Robert Cochet, gentleman of Mickle, co. Derby, mentions his sister Dorothy Joyce, wife of John Joyce of New England. [2][3, transcript of will]
John Joyce requested a parcel of land on 7 August 1638. He was granted two and a half acres in the dividend of meadow land on 16 April 1640. [4, 1: 93, 150]
John was chosen a constable for Yarmouth on 7 June 1648. He was chosen a surveyor of highways for Yarmouth on 3 June 1652 and 3 June 1662. [4, 2: 102; 3: 9; 4: 15] Mr. John Joyce was on the grand enquest jury on 7 June 1653 and 7 June 1655. [4, 3: 32; 4: 91] He was on the trial jury on 5 June 1666. [4, 4: 125]
John made his will on 20 November 1666. He left his wife Dorothy one-third of his house and land during her lifetime and one-half his cattle and all his indoor movables. He left his son Hosea, two-thirds of his house and land, the other third after Dorothy's death, half his cattle, and the rest of his outdoor movables. He left his daughters Mary and Dorcas 20 shillings each. He left Reverend Thomas Thornton 30 shillings. He left Richard Taylor at the Rock 20 shillings because he is poor, provided he vindicated John's name and acknowledged the wrong he did him about a calf. He named Hosea his executor and Anthony Thacher, Mr. Edmond Hawes, and Anthony Hallett his overseers. Inventory was taken on 18 February 1666/7 and exhibited at court on 5 March 1666/7 under the oath of Hosea Joyce. [5] Letters of administration on the estate of Mr. John Joyce were granted to Hosea Joyce on 5 March 1666/7. [4, 4: 141]
Children of John Joyce and Dorothy Cochet
i. Dorcas Joyce died on 10 June 1707 in Yarmouth. She married Nathaniel Bassett.
ii. Hosea Joyce married Martha ___. Martha, the wife of Hosea Joyce, died on 3 April 1670 in Yarmouth. [1] He married second Elizabeth Chipman. Elizabeth, daughter of John and Hope (Howland) Chipman and granddaughter of John Howland, was born on 24 June 1647 in Plymouth. [2]
iii. Mary Joyce married Joseph Hall. [6] Joseph, the son of John and Bethiah Hall, was baptized on 3 July 1642 in Barnstable. [6]
iv. Abigail Joyce was baptized on 1 June 1646 in Yarmouth. [2] She probably died young.
