RICHARD GARRETT (d. 1662)

LYDIA TILDEN (bp. 1625–aft. 1670), daughter of Elder Nathaniel Tilden and Lydia Huckstep


Richard Garrett died intestate on 29 March 1662 in Boston. [1] He married Lydia Tilden. [1]

Lydia Tilden, the daughter of Nathaniel Tilden and Lydia Huckstep, was baptized on 28 May 1625 in Tenterden, county Kent. [2] She died after 12 May 1670.

Lydia came to New England with her family on the Hercules of Sandwich on 4 March 1634/5. [2]

Lydia is called Lydia Garrett, my wife's daughter, in the 20 December 1664 will of her stepfather Timothy Hatherly. [2] Her brother Joseph Tilden left "my sister Lydia Garrett" a bequest in his will of 12 May 1670. [1]

Mr. Garrett of Scituate was fined for selling wine retail without an order at the 5 March 1638/9 court. [3]

Richard is called "Mr. Garat" on the 1643 list of Scituate men between 16 and 60 who were capable of bearing arms. [1]

He was the first clerk of the Conihassett Partners of Scituate. Samuel Deane in his History of Scituate says that "their records were kept ... in beautiful order and fill a large volume." [1] He was town clerk in 1636–1639 and in 1645–1649. [1]

Richard served on important committees with Mr. Timothy Hatherly and his father-in-law Elder Nathaniel Tilden. [1]

The inventory of Mr. Richard Garrett, who died on 29 March 1662 amounted to £66-08-08. His relict Lydia deposed on 20 July 1662. [4]

Upon a petition of Lydia's brother Mr. [Joseph] Tilden and her stepfather Mr. [Timothy] Hatherly, the court granted Mistress Lydia Garrett the right to sell liquor in Scituate on 4 August 1663. [3, 4:44]

Children of Richard Garrett and Lydia Tilden:

i. Joseph Garrett was born on 10 March 1648/9 in Scituate. He died on 19 July 1714 in Scituate. He married Ruth Buck.

ii. John Garrett was born on 25 November 1651 in Scituate. [5] He died before 8 April 1718. [1] He married Mary Buck about 1686. [1] Mary, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Holbrook) Buck, was born about 1655 and died after April 1718. [1]

John made his will on 4 September 1697 in Scituate. [1]

iii. Nathaniel Garrett was baptized on 14 May 1654 in Scituate. [5]

iv. Mary Garrett was born on 5 November 1655 in Scituate. [5]

v. Richard Garrett was born in 1661 [6] or about 1653 [1]. He died in 1742 in Scituate. [1]He married Persis Pierce on 3 December 1695. [5] Persis, the daughter of Captain Michael Pierce, was born about 1662. [1] Persis, the wife of Richard died on 14 December 1715, age 53, in Scituate. [5]

Richard Garrett, tailor of Scituate, made his will on 14 November 1727. [1]
