Among them was Tenterden's former mayor, Nathaniel Tilden; his wife Lydia and their children Joseph, Thomas, Stephen, Mary, Sarah, Judith, and Lydia; his servants Thomas Lapham, George Sutton, Edward Ford, Edward Jenkins, Sarah Couchman, Mary Perien, and James Bennett. Nathaniel was a part owner of the Hercules and the finances of the trip may be the reason that he sued Comfort Starr for damages of 100 pounds on 3 January 1636/7—a suit that was later settled. [8, 1:21][9]

Nathaniel built a house in Scituate between September 1634 and October 1636. [1] Nathaniel Tilden's house in Scituate had two stories and seven rooms: the hall, the inner room, the hall chamber, the inner chamber and servants' chambers. [8]

The first ruling elders of the First Church in Scituate were Nathaniel Tilden and Henry Cobb. Elder Cobb moved to Barnstable in 1639 or 1640 and Elder Tilden died in 1641. No successors were appointed. [10, 90]

Nathaniel bought about five acres of land on the third cliff and adjoining marsh from John Emerson on 2 February 1636/7. He bought land at the north end of the third cliff from Henry Merrick on 10 April 1638. He bought two acres of marsh from William Crocker on 16 May 1638. Nathaniel Tilden, gentleman of Scituate, "being sick and weake" made his will on 25 May 1641. Among other things he disposed of land in Scituate and Tenterden. His heirs were his wife Lydia; his two youngest children Lydia and Steven; his son Joseph who received a double portion; his other sons Thomas and Stephen; his daughter Judith; his daughter Mary, the wife of Thomas Lapham; his daughter Sarah, the wife of George Sutton. He refers to his two servants Edward Jenkins and Edward Tarte. He named his son Joseph his sole executor. His inventory was taken on 31 July 1641 and contained five pounds worth of books. The will of Nathaniel Tilden of Scituate, gentleman, was exhibited at the General Court on 6 September 17 Charles [1641]. [13, 3: 220–3]

[15]

According to the Scituate vital records, Mr. Joseph Tilden died on 3 June 1670 in Scituate. [16, 2: 451] Either this date or the date of his inventory must be an error. He married Elizabeth, the daughter of John Twisden, on 20 November 1649 in Scituate. [1] She died after 6 July 1680.

Joseph was one of the Conihassett Partners of Scituate.

Joseph is mentioned and named executor in his uncle Joseph Tilden's will of 1 February 1642. Letters of administration were granted instead to his uncle Hopestill Tilden as Joseph was "now dwelling in parts across the sea." [4]

Joseph is almost invariably called "Mr. Joseph Tilden" in the colonial records.

Joseph appeared to have some surveying skills. On 24 May 1652 William Collyar and Thomas Prence reported to the court that they were appointed to view a range laid out at Scituate, which had led to contention. They said that they had gone back and found their old marked trees and with the help of Mr. Joseph Tilden and others, they clarified the bounds. [1:81] On 7 March 1644/5 the court appointed Captain James Cudworth and Mr. Joseph Tilden to lay out land for William Randall. [11, 4:82] On 2 March 1668/9 Joseph, James Cudworth and Cornet Studson were appointed to revisit bounds at Scituate. [11, 5:12]

Joseph was appointed to carry out some responsibilities. On 3 October 1662 he was appointed to a committee to divide the lands held in partnership between John Williams and his troublesome son John. On 3 March 1662/3 he was appointed to a jury to make a decision about the division. [11, 4:27, 30–31] On 5 June 1667 the court appointed Captain James Cudworth and Mr. Joseph Tilden to demand and receive from John Williams what was due John's wife Elizabeth. That day, it also granted Joseph letters of administration on the estate of his stepfather Timothy Hatherly. [11, 4:153, 155] On 3 October 1665 Joseph and Jeremiah Hatch were appointed the guardians of Nathaniel Man. The same day Joseph and Walter Hatch were appointed overseers of the estate of Lieutenant James Torrey. [11, 4: 105, 110]

Joseph was unusually quarrelsome. Thomas Tilden and Moris Truant complained against Joseph and were awarded three shillings damages plus costs on 7 June 1651. On 7 October Joseph complained against Moris Truant for mowing grass on Hatch's Island. The jury found for the defendant. [12, 54, 56]

On 6 March 1654/5 he was fined ten pounds but the court said, "wee conceive hee was drawne into it by the base and ill carriage of John Ramsden." On 29 September 1658 Joseph requested a review. This was granted and he was cleared in March 1658/9. [11, 3: 69, 75, 148–9]

On 4 October 1664 Joseph complained that Edward Bumpus, Jr. was in debt to him for eight pounds and the court appointed a committee to negotiate with him on behalf of Edward. [11, 4:75]

On 1 March 1658/9 Humphrey complained again and was granted 40 shillings. On 4 October 1664 Joseph and other complained against Humphrey for trespass and the court found for the plaintiffs. [12, 73, 75, 90, 118]

Mr. Thomas Robinson complained against Joseph for detaining barley that he was supposed to turn into malt. The jury found for the plaintiff on 5 March 1655/6. [12, 115]

On 4 October 1664 Joseph complained against John Williams, Jr. for 80 pounds debt. The jury found for the defendant. [12, 118]

On 21 October 1666 Joseph had two outstanding complaints of defamation against William Randall, seeking 1,000 pounds damages for one and five pounds for the other. These actions were withdrawn on the condition that William make a public acknowledgment that he spoke sinfully and wickedly. [12, 118]
