JOSEPH GARRETT (1648–1714), son of Richard Garrett and Lydia Tilden

RUTH BUCK (d. by 1726), daughter of Lieutenant Isaac Buck and Frances Unknown

Joseph, the son of Richard Garrett, was born on 10 March 1648/9 in Scituate. [1] He was baptized on 1 April 1649 in Scituate. [2] He died on 19 July 1714, age 66, in Scituate. [1] He is buried in the Men of Kent Cemetery in Scituate. [3] He married Ruth Buck on 17 January 1676 in Scituate. [1]

Ruth Buck died before 25 April 1726.

In the 1695 division of Ruth's father's estate, Ruth is referred to as the wife of Joseph Garrett. [4]

Joseph was one of the many residents of Scituate to be involved in a dispute with Captain John Williams. However, John left Ruth five pounds in his will.

On 6 February 1670 Joseph Garrett of Scituate acknowledged that he had received from his aunt Elizabeth Tilden, the executrix of his Uncle Joseph Tilden's estate, the 40 shillings bequeathed to him by his grandfather [his mother's stepfather] Mr. Timothy Hatherly, deceased. [5]

Joseph and Ruth joined the Scituate church on 1 July 1711. [7]

Joseph, husbandman of Scituate, made his will on 4 July 1714 and it was proved on 3 January 1714/5. His sole executor and main beneficiary was his son Joseph. He also left bequests to his wife Ruth and his daughters Ruth Wade, Mary Briggs, Elizabeth Briggs and Jael Garret. [4]

Inventory on Joseph's estate was presented on 31 January 1714/[5?]. His estate was not settled, however, until 25 April 1726, when it was divided into three parts. One part went to his daughter Ruth, the wife of Joseph Wade of Scituate; one part went to his daughter Jael Garrett; and one part went to Mary and Elizabeth Briggs, the daughters of Joseph Briggs and his deceased wife Mary. [6]

Ruth Garrett of Scituate, the widow of Joseph Garrett, made her will on 26 December 1717. She left bequests to her son Joseph, her daughters Jael and Ruth Wade, and her granddaughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Hannah Briggs. She named her son Joseph her executor. [7]
